Well we made the meal out on Thursday, a day late. It was most enjoyable but I was quite worn out when we got back home. I think I have been asleep more than I have been awake this last week. The pain still continues and I am beginning to wonder just when it will go away. At least thje medication controls it even if it it does make me sleepy

I have no replies of any note from the Marriotts in the area and now feel I have come to the end of the line. I don't think I will ever find out what happened to my bloodline grandfather. Meanwhile I have made contact with distant cousins in Australia and New Zealand, both through this site. Contact includes photographs which I love.

Its just short note tonight as I feel the sleep kicking in again. I must say I miss my walking and outdoor activiites. I hope all is back to normal soon

One further note. I have managed to send out 50 letters with stamped addressed envelopes to all the relevant Marriott families in   the Blackburn and Manchester area.  No luck, few replies.  So my attempt at tracing the relatives and descendants of the Wilfred Marriott I found that died in Blackburn in 1965 have failed completely, neither newspaper letters or the personal touch have worked. I am now completely empty of ideas. If any of you have any more ideas please let me know. I am beginning to lose faith in my own addage

If you kep searching you will find it!..

Not in the case of my grandfather I feel

 14 January 2008
I can't believe it is the 14th of January already. Doesn't time fly. We had our final Christmas celebration at friends on January 5th. This was followed by a few days in the Lake District.

The weather was rather variable. Sun and wind one day followed by rain on another. Unfortunately I was not able to enjoy it to the maximum as I am suffering considerably with a  problem with my back and upper thighs. It appears that I may have done some damage with all the walking that we did over the holiday period. I am unable to drive and certainly can't walk. I tried to swim  at the leisure centre, but was both frightened to lift my feet and unable to lift them. This is not what I would call a good start to the year.

What does a usually active person do when confined to the house or at least cofined to sitting. I have read one book and started another. Quite an occasion as I never read novels. I have also invested in some painting DVDs which I can watch on my laptop when I am sitting down. I am no full of enthusiasm and when I came manage to sit at a table long enough I  will have a go at painting flowers.

I hope I will be able to get to my painting  lesson Wednesday. I should be able to get a lift there and back, but sitting in one place for several hours may be difficult. Also I do not know if I wil be able to stay awake long enough, because of the strong drugs I am taking. 4-6 weeks recovery I have been told. That may even put paid to my birthday meal out this week.

Ah well another sign of age I think.

Back to mysecond novel!!!

 01 January 2008
New Years Day, and the end to the festive activities. Everything went according to plan. The meal out on Christmas Eve with the girls and respective husbands was a very pleasant affair. We went to a local Italian restaurant, which is small and friendly.  Lancashire daughter left us early as her back still gives her problems when she sits for any length of time.
On Christmas Day they went to their respective in laws, and Dad came to us. He was in a cheery mood, ate well and then fell asleep for an hour. On awakening he wanted to go back home. This gave us an opportunity to prepare for the evenings visitors and the next meal!! Good fun was had by all, and we made it to bed about half past midnight.

The next day, Boxing Day, we were by ourselves. It was a  bright dry day so we went out walking, about 7 miles in all. We went through the local nature reserve at Healey Dell, across the river Spod and over to Rooley Moor, following the old packhorse trails and routes. We finally made it to Greenbooth reservoir in Norden. I wanted to see the new wind generators going up on Scout Moor, but the hill was surrounded in mist, so we headed home, back over the moors and through the Dell. 3 and a half hours non stop walking so we were rather tired on return.

I think it was Thursday when I tackled my painting of Moonlight, that certainly took most of the day ie daylight. Its a bit difficult to paint in artificial light.

We haven't bothered much with the sales this year, but Rochdale town centre has been very busy. I had to venture in to buy a birthday card for Lancashire daughter, as she likes humourous ones and my card making skills don't stretch to that. Needless to say very few birthday cards are available on the shelves at this time of year, I suppose its my fault she has a birthday so near to Christmas, but then she was due on Christmas Day. She will be 33 this time, it makes me feel so old. This has been reinforced today as Bob is transfering old family videos to CD. We have just watched camping in thhe Pyrenees 1992,  Camping at Interlaken 1994, and Disneyland Paris in 1993. We ALL look so young...

New Year came in with a celebration meal, kindly provided by some close friends in Manchester. Eddie had a 5 way heart bypass in October, but he insisted that he could manage. He and Joan did us proud, with an exceptional 4 course meal, fireworks and champagne at midnight. We got  back home about 2.00 am, whereupon we phoned a cousin ( found through my genealogy) in California . I think he was shocked to get a phone call at that time of day. We were ready for bed then as we had had a full day including another 7 mile walk in the morning. Walking the hills at this time of year is so refreshing and quiet. We feel so lucky to live where we do.

Today is a quiet day. This morning we walked into Rochdale and back, about 3 miles the round trip. Now I am pottering witha little water colour painting.but it is going dark already. Finally, I want to finish some letters this evening. I have set myself a task of contacting every person called Marriott in the Burnley and manchester area, to help in my quest to find my grandfather. Maybe 2008 will be the lucky year

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE...Another installment next week

 24 December 2007
and its Monday again. It was a busy week. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the last of the jobs in France. Althought the kitchen is not finished we only have a few jobs to do; coat of gloss on the new wood, whitewash the ceiling, and put a few strips of wallpaper up. It will have to wait until March now. Its a bit too cold for me to be enticed to Brittany in the winter!.

We had a bit of bad news on our last day. We had someone round to inspect the wood. Although the previous owner had treaeted all the wood inside the house, he had not done th eroof, the garage and the grain store. We have an infestation of various wood beetles which need urgent treatment. That is 5000 Euro we hadn't reckoned on spending.

We set off home at 8.00am on the thursday, and arrived back  home at midnight. It was a beautiful crossing, blue skies  crystal sea etc. The ferry got in early. On our drive home we even managed to call in to see Warwickshire daughter, and share a pizza.

The big event of the week is that I am now Great Aunty Sue, a little boy born to my nephew and partner on the 22nd. Suddenly I feel OLD

We have just been out for a two hour walk on the moors. Prefestive exercise. Unfortunatley the mist descended and although we were refreshed when we got home we were rather wet. We certainly feel virtuous and can  enjoy the festivites without too much guilt about over indulging.

So MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE., Remember friends and relatives past and present and if you can try to include those who would not normally be alone

Sue.
