Moscow, Aug 16: Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalyov woke on the International Space Station (ISS) Tuesday as the new record holder for the longest time spent in space, racking up 748 days during six missions since 1988.
Krikalyov, 46, flew twice on Russia's now scrapped Mir station, twice with a US shuttle, and twice on the ISS as a member of the first US-Russian crew in 2000 and of the 11th permanent crew currently manning the orbiter.
The record was previously held by fellow Russian Sergei Avdeyev, whose 747 days and 14 hours in space remained unbeaten for six years.
Krikalyov is due to return to Earth in October with NASA astronaut John Phillips after completing a six-month flight.
