Printable Version Stanley sticking his oar in......

It's been a busy week. I knew it would be when I had my first pot of tea on Monday. The CH boiler is poorly, plenty of heat but no hot water, lots of correspondence to keep up with and then there's this bloke Doc that has taken over my life with his website.....

It was at this point that I realised that my main hard disc had reached it's sell-by date. I'll spare you the details but it has taken a week, with a lot of help from my friends, to get fully up and running. Alright, I now have a far better system running faster than ever before but when you're my age 18 hour days aren't really very sensible.

Then I got the Doc's first newletter. The take-up figures for membership are wonderful. I am so glad that the site is lifting off. Not least of course because it showcases so much of my research. This is the ideal way to give it to the world, free to air and easily accessed. The LTP sat in the library at Lancaster for 25 years because it was hard to access. It has had more exposure in the last week than in the preceding 25 years. Wonderful.

I note that Doc has thanked me and Ken Ranson for making our research available. I can't speak for Ken of course but my view is that the thanks are due to Doc. I have a vague idea how many hours it took to put my first contribution on line. 100 years ago we would have burned him for witchcraft. So Doc, put modesty aside and accept my heart-felt thanks. (Don't sit back and relax though, there is much more to come.)

I was speaking to Doc this week as he slaved over my PC rescuing me from a fate worse than death and he told me that I was contagious. He had started writing his memoirs and even better, was going to do some taped interviews like the ones in the LTP! I am so pleased! This is exactly how the site ought to work, triggering people off into doing their own recording and writing. I have one or two suggestions about this....

If anyone out there wants to have a go, open the LTP and download the list of questions you'll find in the document section. This is what I used and will give you some clues about the line of questioning to follow. When you have finished, download a transcript from the LTP and transcribe your own work using that style. When you have done that, submit it to Doc for the site. If it is anywhere near decent quality I promise you I will archive it at Clitheroe and Lancaster in the same way that the LTP is saved for posterity. That way you finish up with a treasured possession for your family and a guarantee that you have made your mark on history. If your grandparents are alive, start with them.

If we all participate this site can grow and grow. I believe that the ordinary workers have been denied a voice for far too long. 50 years ago we had no control over methods of publishing and so we were silent. There is no excuse today, we have access to the biggest publisher in the world, the internet. Let's use it and make sure that in a hundred years Barlick will be held up as an example of how well a town's history can be documented. All we have to do is switch the TV off and do something about it!

Love to you all, Stanley.
