Printable Version Broughton Family History

This is a document I did in response to an enquiry.  It contains what I have in my index to date.  Feel free to use it as you will or copy it to other people. [One of the Broughtons lived at Up Flat and the enquiry was for early maps as well]

BROUGHTON INFO AS OF 10 April 2004

UP FLAT FARM, BROGDEN LANE.

1853 1st edition 6” OS map shows  ‘Up Flat’ 200 yards west of Aynhams on Brogden Lane.  1892 1st edition 25” OS map shows ‘Up Flat’ and Up Flat Well in the field behind.  A bench mark is shown on the opposite side of the lane; 493.6 ft above sea level.  Greenwood’s 1818 map shows the same building marked as ‘Flat’. [This map is crude and not much detail but the building is clearly marked which is surprising, more important than it looks]  1956 OS 6” shows the well as Up Flat Well and the building but it is not named.

WHITEMOOR MAP

In the PRO there is a map of Whitemoor dated 1580/81.  Page no. 507 in the catalogue.  3437 Barnoldswick 1580/1581 (DL 31/106).  See also PRO DL 1/123 T for a mention of a suit between Tempest et al, tenants of Barnoldswick v. Bannester et al, tenants of Foulridge.

This map was made to support the court case and is very crude.  It shows no detail of Barnoldswick beyond the fact that there are clearly enclosures on the waste.  This indicates that population was rising earlier in the century against the trend for the rest of England
