Printable Version Collecting Your Favorite Movie Posters

There are different ways of advertising a movie. So, now there are movie trailers, handbills, heralds, radio and TV spots, sneak previews and publicity stunts to get the attention of the public when a movie needs selling. But for movie fans all over the world, one area of advertising has remained a special favorite, the movie poster. These colorful and interesting posters attract the audience and make them want to see the movie. But aside from this primary function, these posters have another quality.

They’re at once mementos of the experience of watching the film. In this they’re artifacts of our culture. The poster that you see at the cineplex for a film like Hulk or Howard's End could have the same nostalgic appeal, fifty years down the line that a poster of The Wizard of Oz or It Happened One Night has for us today. But, like in all cases, it’s hard to say for sure. However the possibility that it might be famous or even if you just found the movie an unforgettable experience are enough reasons to collect these posters.

One of the main reasons why people collect movie poster art and movie memorabilia is to relive old memories. They collect for reasons that are purely sentimental, i.e. they want to capture a memory of a particular movie that has a special meaning for them. So, it could be favorite movie that brings back lots of positive memories. Or it may have been the first movie that you went to at a theatre. Sometimes it could be the first movie that really moved you emotionally or the first movie that you went to with your wife, boyfriend, brother or sister.

For instance, the posters of Gone With The Wind, the typical 60’s drama of romance and tragedy, makes the audience nostalgic about their youth. But, it has also become a style statement to have a movie poster hanging from your wall. But, the purpose behind movie poster collections varies from collector to collector.

Teenage Collectors
Teenagers usually collect and put up movie posters as a reflection of their individuality. However there are some who also collect the posters of movies in which their movie star idols have starred in. There are still others who collect many memorabilia devoted to a specific actor, director, film genre, etc. Thus, movie posters are the rage among the teenagers.

Adult Collectors
For some adults it’s a hobby to collect movie posters, like collecting stamps, coins or baseball cards. Though not a source to bring in cash, yet movie posters act as a fetish for the teenagers.

For Aesthetic Purpose
Some folks collect movie posters for their beauty. A classic movie poster says a lot about the effort that has gone into the artwork. And, you cannot but admire the attention to detail, design and creativity. So, for many collectors, movie posters are simply beautiful works of art that they wish to own.

So, if you’re a first timer, entering the world of movie poster collectors, a few tips can help you close some great deals and find some good posters: always check the collector's magazines; go to conventions and attend auctions, regularly. Also, talk to dealers. You can also contact another collector with similar tastes. But always remember to take advice and learn from the experience of others. And, make sure that you treat your rival bidders with the courtesy that you would like to be treated with.
