Robert Preston finacial editor writing on the BBC website yesterday highlighting President Paddy O'Bama's intention to cap the pay rises of executives in finanacial institutions that have been bailed out by the taxpayer.

About fifty years ago a bloke called McKinsey announced that everything could be measured and managed. The steady trickle of furore over 'misuse' of language is but one proof that he was wrong. Context is everything and Belle was very perceptive, Goth applied to humans can be offensive but is OK for architecture and novels. I hold no brief for Carole Thatcher, I wasn't there but Jo Brand being offended? I don't know what's going on there! Far better if the effort put into policing language was applied to giving non-white kids better opportunities. They are more likely to be unemployed, stopped and searched or committed to prison, that's the true measure of how we treat them. How many non-whites on the Queen's staff? Certainly no gollywogs in the gift shop at Sandringham now, what a blow for equality! There are two Polish lads living just up the back street, quiet polite and hard working. They are off every morning to work at 05:30 and back by 17:00. No loud music, no bad behaviour and a wonderful argument against all those who rail about immigrants. I'll hazard a guess that they are more representative of the incomers than the ones who grab the headlines. A bit like the millions of good and well behaved children, they are invisible and I'm on their side.
I heard a snow victim on the radio this morning saying that snow disorients him and that many people don't use the heater when stuck in snow because they are afraid they'll run out of petrol. We used to make sure we had a full tank, warm clothing, a shovel, some weight in the boot and a plan. People are so insulated from the world in modern cars that they have forgotten how to survive winter. Words like layers, Damart, scarves and Cromby spring to mind. Chris Aspin reminded me this morning that in the 60s Rossendale had 36" of snow in a straight fal, imagine the headlines that would cause today. heaviest fall I ever saw was more than 12" in half an hour on the road down from Strathaven to Carlisle. I was 30 minutes late getting home with a 60ft motor with 32 big beasts in the boxes. It was so bad the only thing that could move on the old roads was a snow blower. We weren't supermen, we just used our heads and got on with the job.I suppose I'm an old fart......

The roads are so much busier now than they used to be, and modern vehicles dont seem to be designed to cope with snow. Some of them only seem to have about 4 inches of ground clearance, and low profile tyres can't help. It amazes me how many people continue to use the high routes like Skipton Old Road in bad weather conditions even though there are low level alternatives. Its still quite a dramatic sight up near the pub at Black Lane Ends, with the road cut through huge drifts.

No action over prayer-row nurse A Christian nurse who was suspended for offering to pray for a patient's recovery has been told she can return to work.
I'm not a religious person but find this story almost beyond belief. Why was she suspended in the first place?

The person who sacked her should be sat down and just asked why ????
On the direction of whom was you working ???
Did you think about refering this to a Higher Authority (pun) ???
Basic questions still need to be answered

Missed your poat Comrade we were both on at the same time. I have a warm glow about Obama..... Apart from anything else, what a sensible suggestion! Anyone who quibbles with it obviously has an axe to grind. Every time I hear the argument we have to pay them this or they will leave the country I think Good Show! Let's get rid of them. Can anyone show me evidence that we have lost good brains by capping wages?

Stanley, i suppose you remember also skid chains, i recall many old drivers carried a bag of ash/cinders in the boot to spread under the driving wheels, plus a tow rope off course, a piece of rope threaded through the wheel & wrapped around the tyre could also get you moving, but of course if you are a yuppie with a yuppie car you woudn't want to desecrate it with junk that may save your life, living in the Snake & Woodhead areas they were essential items in winter, and of course we had no heaters, so you were already dressed for winter

Capping salaries is rather a blunt instrument, it comes back to the 10% of nothing is nothing argument. !!! Should the salaries of the people who allowed the mess to grow ie MPs, Godron etc be made to take a drop in pay !! They are the ones who held the regulatory keys, and set the goal posts. Forgot to add the SEC as well

What really grabbed my attention to day, and I'm afraid this is going to make me look insular and self obsessed, was that when I logged onto my user nothing was the same!! The desktop picture was completely foreign to me, not only was it not the one I had installed it wasn't any of my pics, the icons had moved and some had gone altogether, there was no info in my documents and none in my bookmarks...yes I panicked, but I calmly talked myself through some procedures, which didn't help at all, then I decided I must have got onto one of the kids users..so I logged off and logged on again..no it was supposedly mine....Help! I knew I should have backed all those files up...finally I calmed down enough to remember system restore and this, my friends, is how I am able to be amongst you all this morning...now can anyone tell me what might have happened to cause this alarming alzheimer like situation to my PC?

Hello Belle..what a nightmare!...can't help with an explanation ,I'm afraid, but similar invasions, (and having to resort to System Restore quite often) were the reason I swapped to a Mac..
My mate Richard has never had anything else ,and told me that there have only ever been a handful of viruses in the history of Apple Mac.
It wasn't a difficult change (apart from the Money) and I can thoroughly recommend it.
But it's maybe not the right time to discuss ,whilest you're still seething ...eh
All the Best

I agree to an extent Frank about the government but If Brown and Darling Darling had suggested 12 months ago that state interference in the way that banks operate was needed to avoid recession most of you would have been baying for their blood. Its the bu**ers with multi national control of finance that has got us in this mess not the goverment. Their failing has been in not acting to nationalise all the banks when the signs were apparent. Portia, please don't think I was being impolite about people younger than myself. I thoroughly agree that it is best to show both metric and imperial units because as a nation we still use both (no matter what the EU might say). I'm a scientist by training and I've had no choice but to have to use both units for all my career. Now we are all stuck having to do the same.

I didn't take offence - honest. But my grasp of the metric is the source of some amusement round here. Particularly the day I said I couldn't understand why everyone was getting het up about the forecast of 30cm of snow, after all it's only just over an inch!

Wendy, a Cromby is a very good heavy overcoat. I thought the Obama cap was restricted to the higher echelons in financial institutions that have been bailed out with taxpayer's money. Nothing to do with government. It sounds sensible to me. As with arguments against paying bonuses out at Northern Wreck.
