Anyone using the roundabout at our end of the M65 or the imediate area cannot fail to have noticed the scale of the development on the Bunkers Hill site adjacent to Vivary Way. This is of course the New Flagship Boundary Mill , I have been following the progress of the work with a great deal of interest as my Wife is an emloyee of one of the concessions within the store. So here by way of a matter of interest is a description of what will be as we understand it. This is based on sighting of the plans and information given out at staff meetings. The main entrance to the new store will be the one on the aforementioned roundabout, with a secondary pedestrian access close to Colne Raiway Station, below Primet Bridge on the right, possibly at the end of Leach Street. The group of buildings by the main entrance are the new restaurant complex, this is built on a curve, a two storey building in the centre with an arm at either side, one of which will be a conventional restaurant and the other a fish restaurant, the centre part probably the kitchens and admin. Further up the site is the main store building built on three floors. This building will house not only the store departments but also the warehouses and offices. The old warehouse on Regents Avenue will become the regional distribution centre. the the front of the main store there are two cabins, one at either side. These are 1, Thorntons Chocolates, and 2 Pendle Tourism. The main store will be accessed through revolving doors in the centre at the front giving entrance to the Ladies, Menswear and Shoe departments, glass and china etc to be on the first floor. The warehouses are on the Vivary Way side and staff car parking on the other. Main car park at the front possibly over a thousand spaces. To the rear of the store a further building houses the service units, sprinkler pumps etc and possibly judging by the size of the exhaust that can be seen at present, a standby generator set. When does it all happen? Hand over app January 21st 2008, and the changeover on the weekend of 15/16 March 2008, We know that not everyone is in favour of this type of new development, but I see it as a bold and exciting effort that is being quite tastefully executed.

When Doc and Amie took me for Ben we passed the new store and I couldn't help reflecting that they must be brave to invest that sort of money at the present stage in the economy......

We wanted a cast iron griddle to use on the woodburning stove, and Boundary Mill seemed the most likely place to find one. So I donned my gas mask to avoid the abattoir stench and made my second visit.
The "Re-location Sale" signs were much in evidence all round the store so of course we couldn't help but buy other items too. With the sale price reductions I mentally calculated the total cost to be around £100 and winced as I handed over my debit card at the checkout.
Imagine my delight when the cashier asked for just over £60! They had applied further discounts on the discounted prices shown!
There are bargains to be had there, I can tell you. I suspect another visit, this time for clothes, is on the cards...

I found myself in a long queue of traffic on the Asda/Boundary Mill roundabout on Wednesday and initially couldn't understand why, until I saw the signs 'Re-location Sale'. When I eventually managed to park, Asda was practically empty but I had to go into Boundary Mill also, so eventually braved the crowds. It was heaving with people and I was half an hour queueing at the check-out. There were good reductions but not worth the queueing.

But that was my point, Rossie. With the reductions shown on the goods, we thought the bill was going to be £100 (probably about £150-worth before the Sale)
But they snuck in further reductions without us knowing, to bring it down to £60. Now that's what I call a bargain - being a Yorkshire lass I would be happy to queue for half an hour if it made me £90 better off.
However, we went on Friday evening about 6pm - it wasn't at all busy and only queued for a couple of minutes.
I wonder whether they'll make up for these low prices by being more expensive in the new building? We shall see. |

I got an extra 10% off the already discounted price of a bag so no complaints there but there were lots of mutterings and chunnerings amongst the queueing hoards that some stuff was not that much cheaper. I hate crowds and queueing, although I concede that for a saving of £90 even I would put up with it. The answer must be to go at 6pm on a Friday

The new building sticks out like a sore thumb. Coming down Wheatley Lane Rd to Barrowford it domintes the view to Colne with its "whiteness" sticking out. Pity we don't have a few chimneys' working to help blend it in a bit. Nolic

It's a typical portal frame shed Comrade and a big one at that. I suspect the reason for the height of the build is that if they ever sell it, it will be suitable for a variety of industrial uses and therefore easier to sell.

The stone building that borders the M65 roundabout is being advertised as a fish and chip restaurant. Nolic

You can think what you like, but now that have have been on the new site and seen it all at close quarters my opinion is that for a modern construction set up it would take a lot of beating. It is big, it is bold, it is practical and when the thousands of plants and trees start to mature, it will be very impressive indeed. When one exits the M65 onto the site, there is a second roundabout behind the fish restaurant complex, from this runs a central avenue direct to the main entrance. At either side of the site are the service roads giving access to and from the warehouse, the right hand one also leads to the coach park, Bannisters Restaurant is on the first floor behind the balcony along with the coffee shop. The second floor is the new office complex, replacing the existing one on Greenfield Rd. The interior is stunning, well lit and spacious, with stairs, lifts and escalators between the floors. I understand that the toilets would not look out of place in top hotels. My personal reaction when stood close to main main building was "WOW" awesome, I am certain that you would have to look long and hard to find a similar venture that has been so well planned and executed. Good luck to them and to those who designed it,"Well done" and to the extra one hundred staff who are going to work there, enjoy.
