I got back from t'pub last night and was lying in bed having a think before i dozed off, i got round to pondering the origin of the name "Barnoldswick".
When i was younger i was told that it came from a ye olde chap called Barnulf, he settled here and created a village/hamlet which back in them days was called a wick..... put them together creating Barnulf's Wick and then throughout the millienia it became Barnoldswick.
I also remember being told a few original names of some local towns such as Skipton (Sheep Town) and Salterforth (Salter's Ford??)
I might be wrong but i was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this and if there are any other interesting tales regarding the origin of local town names?

No problem. This site is so big it takes a long time to find your way round it. The forum search is brilliant since the advent of the new server and Doc's work on it. When you think about how much stuff there is in there it's a miracle.
