Recently the site has been targeted by numerous spammers and email harvesting robots, Some of you wil have received many of their emails offering long lost money, pledges and downright begging letters.
A lot of these were initially conducted by automatic email harvesting robots, who automatically registered as new members, thereby giving them access to the member listings. I stepped up the security on the registration page to overcome these robots, by requiring them to enter a return email address, before they could be accepted as a member. The robots are now history.
However, individuals from the Ivory coast, Samalia, Botswanna and other african countries are continuing to target the site and register as ligitimate members, again giving them access to the member list where they send individual Private messages using the sites software, luckily because this will be a manual process, only a few will recieve these messages.
I can step up the security another level (or 3), however the security process will reach a point where legitimate new members will be turned away because of the rigourous registration process, hence my reluctance to impliment the more secure method.
What I am asking is that you have patience with these troublesome annoying people and just delete their messages, if they do not get a response, then they will quickly ignore this site and move on.
In the last two months I have identified and banned more than 20 of these so-called members and will continue to do so, I am continually on the site throughout the day and patrol all new members and topics as they appear.
Don't give their messages the light of day, just delete them.
best regards

Not so sure about the `confidenciality' Cath, but perhaps you spell it that way down under!

Never trust anyone who wants to `actualize' a venture or offers you an `awesome' sum of money (he's probably a bank manager in disguise!).

Scams are scams, no matter how clever the cover story. They wouldn't do it if some of the stupid punters weren't biting. A plague on all of them.

Yes, Moh, the proof is in the number of people who admit to the police they have lost their savings to people sending emails like this, even if we think the emails are obviously dodgy. I've just had one of the Nigerian ones arrive saying they want to pay me millions of pounds. It tells me to be very careful because there are fraudsters about!

I monitor my own spam and over the years I've got pretty good at identifying the rogues. I just delete them all beforte doing anything else. You can see various common threads in them and it makes me think that most of them come from a very few sources.

Dear beloved friend,

with warm heart I offer my friendship and greetings, I hope this mail meet you in good time.
However, as we have not met personally or had any dealings in the past. I have heard so
many good things about you, I humbly ask that you take due consideration of its
importance and immense benefit. I sincerely seek your confidence, as I make this proposal
to you as a person of integrity.

I am Mrs. Jane Anderson from Swistzerland, deaf and suffering from a long time cancer
of the breast, from all indication my conditions has really deteriorated and I can not work
or do things that are stressful. According to my doctors they have told me that I may not
live for the next few months, this is because the cancer stage has got to a very bad stage.
I was brought up in a motherless baby’s home before I got married to my late husband for
twenty years without any child. My Husband (James Anderson) died on air crash on a
vacation to the Canary Islands, Spain.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/20/world/main4365961.shtml,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7572643.stm,
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Madrid-Plane-Crash-Line,
 http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/21/content_9563750.htm. Before his death
we were true Christians.

Since his death I decided not to re-marry, I sold all my inherited belongings and
deposited all and the sum of 3.5 million dollars with a Security Company in Europe.
Presently, this money is still with the company and the management wrote me as the
legitimate beneficiary to my late husband estate to come forward to receive the money for
safe keeping. It has attracted a demurrage as the security fee paid by me has expired.
I rather issue a letter of authorization to somebody to receive it on my behalf since I can
not come over because of my illness or they get it confisticated. So instead of getting it
confiscated I would prefer someone whom I can trust to receive the funds and utilize it
according to my wishes. And the best part of it is that the security company told me in the
letter that they can have the consignment funds delivered to my approved next of kin in his
house if within Europe or transferred to his bank account and if outside Europe it can be
 transferred to any!
where in the world.

Presently, I can only communicate with my laptop in a hospital in United Kingdom where
I have been undergoing treatment for my sickness. It is my last wish to see that this
money is invested/donated to any organizations of your choice e.g. the poor homes,
the motherless baby’s home, the deaf and dumb/churches. All I seek for is a God fearing
person like you, who will carry out my last wishes. I prayed before I emailed you today and
the Holy Spirit gave me the confidence to send you this email. I took this decision before
I rest in peace because my time will soon be up.

As soon as I receive your reply I will send you information that will guard and back you up.
All I need from you is a confidential assurance that the funds when received by you will be
used for the said purpose, I know scams are on the internet and it is difficult to trust but I
do not know why the Holy spirit still approved me to email you about this out of few email
addresses I have, yours was the only one that was approved for me to contact.

Waiting for your reply.

Yours in Christ.
Mrs. Jane Anderson.

I wonder whether anyone can tell me why spam emails exist. What do people gain from sending them? Why are there so many multiple messages? I suspect some contain trojans etc and some are just attempts to identify valid email addresses. I suspect that the Nigerian ones are simply scams and I have noticed they are never multiple messages like the others for casinos and Viagra. Is there an explanation or is it one of life's little mysteries?

I guess there is the whole spectrum from the malicious type that just wants to disrupt everybody else's life as much as possible at one end, all the way through to the clever and organised ones who want to make piles of money or sow the seeds of political dissent. The multiple messages may be the first type, the more copies they send the more trouble they hope to cause. Or they can arise from the senders using multiple address lists without bothering to "de-dupe" them.

I have an early example of the `Nigerian scam', a typed letter that was sent to my father-in-law in the 1990s through conventional post with a nice Nigerian postage stamp on the envelope. Those were the days! They would sometimes even ask you to go out to Nigeria to meet them and collect your cash.

Its all about numbers

From a marketing point of view mass mailings historically produce around 2% response rates and I suspect that mass Emailings offer the same kind of returns. So if you send out 100,000 emails asking for whatever, personal details, contacts, confirmations etc then you would expect around 2,000 returns.

Out of those 2,000 returns maybe you can convert again around 2% of them into hard earned cash, so if you can scam a modest £1,000 out of each of them then you can get yourself a very tidy sum of around £40,000 each time you send a email out.

Send an email out once per day and thats a very tidy £280,000 a week, not a bad wage for sitting on your ass and pressing a mouse button a few times a week.

A lot of the more recent spammers originate from former eastern block countries and have a strong connection to organised crime.
