Nolic, how about setting up the Barnoldswick and District Savings Bank with an emphasis on customer service, it's bound to be better than the other UK banks!

Dead Men Risen
From the Daily Telegraph
The manuscript of the book about British operations in Afghanistan had been cleared by the Ministry of Defence after a four-month review process, but on the eve of publication senior officials decided further changes were needed.
Because the publishers Quercus had already completed the 24,000-copy print run, the MoD agreed to purchase all of the books, costing £151,450, and oversee their destruction. The total bill amounts to more than the annual salary of 10 Army recruits.
It is believed that Dr Fox, who has attacked what he describes as the MoD’s culture of waste and “mushrooming costs” had to personally approve the payment for the copies of Dead Men Risen: The Welsh Guards and the Real Story of Britain’s War in Afghanistan, by Toby Harnden, the Daily Telegraph’s US Editor.
But sources said the Defence Secretary was deeply angered by the MoD’s failure to spot the necessary amendments during the lengthy review of the manuscript, which had already led to almost 500 requests for changes.
The decision to buy and pulp the books was taken after interventions from the highest levels of the MoD and the Army. General Sir David Richards, Chief of the Defence Staff and Britain’s most senior officer, made a personal plea to Quercus senior executives to agree to amendments to the book.

Ed going to address a rally in London, very dangerous game when he would have had to do exactly the same thing as the Goverment.
Same number of jobs would have been lost, just over a longer period. Some may say better to do it quickly rather than slow attrition.
The other thing that caught my attention was the letter from "The Pension Service" my wife has a Pension Increase of £3.30 a week. Thank you Tax Payers it is most welcome only it could have been more, some of you folk need to start to dig deeper or we won't be able to continue the life style we have become accustomed to.
I was talking to someone from Padiham the other day they had been to Blackpool and to Southport for Lunch due to the good weather. It's Free you know to catch the Bus mmmm No It's not Free someone else paid for your Transport to have a couple of away days out for lunch. Same for me off to Edinburgh it's Free you know !!!

My first thoughts about Libya when ghadafer was using air strikes was  "let's get in and stop him".  Well we finally get a resolution from the UN, a coalition forms and in we go, it took 3 days for some of the "coalition" to want to back off.  Maybe they thought we would use rubber bullets!

Now the UN wants to hand this over to NATO, Turkey thinks the action to date has been too much of a spanking, and nobody wants to be in charge.  So let's give command to the Canadian General and maybe the middle east dictatorships might not get too mad at the USA and GB this time.  Why do we bother?

If in fact the USA have "secret" oil reserves let's have them use them and then we can all stay out of the middle east and stop playing politics.

Frank, the someone else who paid the pensioners free bus pass could have been themselves, having paid into the sysem all their lives, or the tax of their freinds and family members...it does not bode well for the 'big society' if people are so ungenerous of spirit they begrudge a free day out to people who are too old to work and pay for it from wages.

Did you ever hear such nonsense ?....Bus passes are issued by Councils , and are paid for out of Council Tax....  If you've got one , you should use it . You pay for it .

Next thing you know ,we'll be made to feel guilty if we use the Library , Park ........or Public Convenience.

But wait for it , I can hear a "That's not what I meant "  response brewing ....I wonder what it will be, something to do with distance , no doubt .

What I meant was Males aged 60 being classed as  Pensioners and in need of a Bus Pass and Heating Allowances. We keep coming back to someone taking your money and then making you feel grateful when they give you a little of it back. I like my Bus Pass but I don't need it, along with my neighbour who works as an Accountant for a Large Oil Company. He uses his to go to work on the Bus everyday leaving his company Merc in the drive.Another neighbour goes off to Spain for the Winter
I beg to differ it is not paid for totally from Council Tax a Goverment  Subsidy is also paid, well in Scotland it is. What if you are a young family having to pay Council Tax and knowing that some of the money you are paying is helping a very wealthy Accountant to have Free Transport to work. That can't be fair can it ??
In 2009 the Bus Subsidy for Concessionary Travel was £995,000,000 that is Nine Hundred and Ninety Five Million Pounds
" Next thing you know ,we'll be made to feel guilty if we use the Library , Park ........or Public Convenience "
Don't be silly they are open to everyone not like a Bus Pass.
Why do I get the feeling you feel like you are owed something because you went to work and paid taxes ??
Ponzi is something I don't believe you understand. If you calculate what you paid in, and what you take out it is clearly a Ponzi Scheme, Which is going to collapse sooner than I believe you think.
Like Belle with her the Police Pay 11% into the Pension Pot, I wonder why the deficit in Public Sector Pensions is Billions, is it because more is being taken out than paid in ??. Looks like Ponzi again I'm afraid.
Belle the Big Society was based on People Putting in Not Taking Out.

Maybe freebies/concessions should be given to "qualified" seniors, income being the qualifier.  Can you just hear the carping now that doing that would be unfair.

Bradders, what is it that makes Frank's comment nonsense to you?  To me it is simply a statement of his opinion based on fact.

What , on his bus pass ?......that's outrageous !

I strongly approve of keeping the Merc being kept in the drive...single occupancy car travel is doing a lot of damage.......and presumably the bus would be going "his way" whether he used it or not .

Beats me why an accountant needs a company car anyway.....and if they payed him extra to enable him to buy his own , with a bit of luck he might choose not to . (more energy saved).

I've just seen your addition edit about the Subsidy  (which I wasn't aware of)...and yes it's a lot of money ....but very well spent ,in my opinion. ...and as Belle pointed out , we have paid for it,both in Council Tax and P.A.Y.E....

Your favourite arguement about Ponzi schemes is obviously flawed in some way . If you were correct  the whole global economy would have collapsed long ago......I'm betting it isn't going to happen.

Why not nip along to the bus stop and run it by your Accountant friend when he alights........He might be able to help !

Frank if the Big society is about paying in, not taking out, there is nothing to stop people like yourself who are richly blessed, giving money to the council or the Govt or even the pensioners, so that they can go on a bus journey. As you say if you can afford stuff you shouldn't sponge however neither should you judge those who can't afford...they are not spongers but grateful recipients of bounty!

And another thing....!

It's a well known fact that  women live longer than men.......

They get their full pension at 60 (and bus pass and heating allowance) .....

Can you see where I'm going ......?! ....It's all women's fault , there are obviously too many of them (but not in Cornwall)........

I don't read Frank's comments as feeling that those who need should not get, rather I think he is saying that the problem is that "freebies" should not be based solely on age, but rather on need.
