I'm aware that I keep hijacking poor old Big Malk's band topic, so I thought I'd better start a new one for ours.

But before I do, I'll just mention that BM's band are set to appear at Rolls in November. There! That's fair, int it?

The Border Patrol played at Allan Buck's inauguration dinner and all went well (no forgotten words/chords etc). We were due on at 3.30pm but the meal was delayed and speeches went on longer than anticipated so we didn't take to the stage till going up for 5pm. Unfortunately our sound engineers had another gig to go to so it was all a bit scary as to whether we'd have time, but big do's and little do's, it was OK in the end.

The guests also had a surprise whipround for Elaine's breast cancer fund, After The Storm, and it raised over £150. (She'll soon be able to hand over a large amout of cash to Airedale HODU and Bosom Friends - details to follow.)

I had my minidisc recorder switched on during the gig, but unfortunately the sound was too much for its little microphone and the distortion renders it unfit for public consumption.

Our band name actually fitted in well with some of the speeches which mentioned Barlick being on the Yorks/Lancs border, have your passport ready, etc. However, nothing is carved in stone and I've taken on board all the great suggestions by OG members.

Big Malk, the stage is much, much smaller than I remembered it. I think you might struggle with your rig unless you make sure they extend the stage area.

I know that they've extended the stage in the past, but one story has it that when a famous blues guy (forgotten his name) was onstage, the various components started to part company and he ended up doing the splits when he didn't intend to. He was not a happy bunny.

It's alleged that he asked for a china tea set to be served to him backstage, and no-one was allowed near his dressing room. All they could hear was the sound of cups and saucers being smashed against the wall!

Talk about being a prima donna. I do hope you behave more sensibly, BM, and ask for something a tad more butch to destroy, like a TV set or summat.Go to Top of Page

Sit the speaker stacks down on the floor and you'll have enough room.....

If the stage can hold Streelife then it can hold anybody. The Gas Club in Blackpool used to bill us "Pound for Pound the Best Band Around". We were all big lads. Nolic

I don't know... I start a new topic so that I wasn't hijacking Big Malk's, then we discuss BM's staging problems in this one instead of his. I think it's funny!

The only trouble with speakers on the floor is that the sound might get muffled by the seething crowd at the front and it'll be dreadful further back. But let's face it, I'm no expert on rock bands and their sound. So long as it clears the wax out of your ears at 50 metres it should be OK.Go to Top of Page

Cally....you touched on the breast cancer fund 'whip-round' etc....and I thought it a good time to ask about E's health. Is she fighting fit these days? (having asked that question, I almost feel like one of those rude individuals who discusses another person in the same room as if they aren't there! I would ask her directly if I could.....)

"How are you then E"??????

The subs will be on the floor so by the time you get up to the horns they'll be above earhole level......

Thanks for asking, Maz. E is much better these days and is back at work, though she does get tired very easily. We've heard from other people that this can last 5 years or more. Only 3 years to go, then!

Becoming involved in music has helped her enormously - gave her a new and creative focus.Go to Top of Page

Actually, thinking about it, it's 2 and a half years - November 2004 when first diagnosed, then after the op, 6 months chemo and a month's radiotherapy. No wonder the poor lass feels a bit jaded sometimes.

But every cloud has a silver lining. Her year off work was spent learning more about music as it kept her mind active when her body couldn't do anything much. I think that's the key to her good rate of recovery - a Positive Mental Attitude.Go to Top of Page

Just to prove we did actually play, here's a photo taken by Councillor David Whipp. And look - I'm actually smiling, sort of! Anyway, it might give BM an idea of what the stage is like, although I'm guessing he'll sack the flowers...

Is there any room behind the backdrop?

I had a peep - no I don't think there's any extra space behind.

If I were you, I'd nip down with a tape measure and then ask BM how much space they need - it would be quite tragic for them to come so far and find they can't perform their best set because they're too cramped.Go to Top of Page
