I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while.  Let's see how it goes....

Asked if he was in charge of the nation, in the absence of the Prime Minister -
Mr Clegg told Metro: ‘Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that.

I think we also contributed to their alcoholism by using it to barter with them. Not content with doing this to the Native americans we went on to do it to Aborigines and Eskimos.

Spot on Belle. Introducing alcohol was the easiest way of dealing with them. The administrators in the US constantly use the phrase 'mellowing', in effect getting them drunk before starting treaty negotiations. They had no resistance to alcohol at all. Introduction of sugar into Australia was a big factor in ruining the Aborigine's teeth, good teeth were essential to their way of life. Influenza seems to have been the main factor with the Inuit, Aleuts and other indiginous people in Alaska. We called it civilisation!

Luca Cumani  - Newmarket racehorse trainer

When we married 33 years ago, it was decided that I would make all the big decisions, and my wife would deal with the small ones.

So far there have not been any big decisions.

From former Barlick MP Gordon Prentice...

The idea that the Afghan National Army and the Afghan Police can make Afghanistan secure is risible.  It is not remotely possible."

Jim Devine, former MP jailed for fiddling his expenses:

Along with my parliamentary colleagues my public and private reputation was trashed on the internet… I know several senior MPs that are very concerned about the ability of an individual to receive a fair trial in the internet age

David. Gordon wasn't far from the truth. Mind you, nobody in power will agree with him because it's their 'get out of gaol' card.

`Mellowing' might also be applied to the use of tabloid newspapers, tabloid TV and the internet in the UK to keep the plebs quiet and off the streets. No wonder Rupert Murdoch gets away with so much, the `News of the Screws World', `Sun', Sky etc have done Orwell's Big Brother job without the government or other authoritarians having to be seen to be involved. (But don't listen to me, I'm just an old conspirator!)

Tiz, much truth in what you say. I think the quote is "Pandering to the lowest common denominator." The thing that has always struck me is the way they managed to peddle racist views without actually breaking the Race Relations legislation. Very astute use of language which has spread into the national culture.

Mayor Boris of London speaking about the the NoW, the police commissioner etc: "I'm hacked off". There'll be a lot of people whose phones were hacked into who will be thinking "It's OK for you Boris, but I've been literally hacked off!"

A repetition that fits:

'The floggings will continue until morale improves!'
