Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.

As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.

He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!

[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs.  His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history....  he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault.  He had too bad a start.....]

Up to now I've relied on the optician who does a pressure test each year and examines my retina.....  I'm all for the tests, they can do no harm.

I weighed BJ this morning and got a shock.  He's 20lbs!  This means that since I got him three weeks ago he's put on 3lbs.  No cause for worry, I think the exercise and good grub is enabling him to go into his last growing phase which was obstructed by his restricted life style and Asda tinned meat.  He's not fat, just putting on bone and muscle.  Very satisfying to see him develop.  Mind you, at a pound a week he's catching up with me!

A friend of mine visited with a birthday cake for both of us (she is 21 on the 19th.) and half a bottle of champagne.  We walked Jack and he approves of her.....  I had a glass and a half of champagne and slept like a log.

Jack is doing fine, definitely a member of the team.  He's different than any dog I have ever had because he eats fruit and vegetables.  Grapes, pears, apples plums.....  Must try him on carrots and brocolli.  another thing I've found out is that he occasionally snores.  I woke up the other night and heard this noise coming from the bottom of the bed where he likes to sleep.  It took me a minute or two to realise that it was him snoring......  I've been very lucky, thanks to Doc and Carole for stepping in and putting a word in for me.....  Oh, and he's discovered the joys of fetching a ball back, makes it easy to get some miles on him up on Letcliffe..

Glad to hear Jack is doing so well, Stanley. Our dog Alfie loves oranges! Be careful with grapes though, I'm sure I've heard that they can be toxic for dogs

Our Spaniel Sam loves nothing better than to crunch his way through a carrot.

I haven't tried him with a carrot yet.  The grapes don't appear to be harming him Wendy and his coat shines like velvet.  What a lucky dog to have an attentive companion animal.  Mind you, he repays it, he's never more than six feet away from me.

Stanley,
As long as you give Jack the grapes it should do no harm, it is a different story when you try to give him the grapes through the bottle , that's when you get an other picture.

Higgins eats veg though he isn't too keen on fruit. When I give fresh veg to the guinea pigs, Higgins has to have some too.
He used to eat apple when Maggie was alive but that was because he was frightened of missing something. He won't touch apple now!

When Sam was a pup he loved bananas but won't touch them now - likes carrots though.

Gloria, I read the bit about raisins and grapes.  Don't worry, he only gets the odd grape.  I must try a carrot.....  it will be a good tooth cleaner and you should see the size of his teeth!  biggest mothful I have ever seen on a little dog.  I've been watching him very carefully while he is chasing ball because I know how easy it is to push a pup too far.  Big Jack's limiting factor was breathing and heart rate.  Black Jack's limiting factor is that after about 15 throws (average run out and in about 150 yards) he starts favouring his near fore leg and limps slightly for a few minutes.  Interestingly when he gets to that stage he stops bringing the ball back.  I shall ration him to ten throws for a while to let him get his strength up.

Jack got chilled on Friday when we got caught in a nasty sleety shower on Letcliffe and hasn'r eaten since.  very interesting stool....  I'm pleased to report he has never lost his bounce, just his ability to digest anything!  he has taken half a meat pie this morning and is sleeping it off.  Back on the road to recovery I think....  Kids..........

We had Sam clipped on Monday last week because his fur was so long he looked like a dish mop when he had been out in the wet - ever since it has been bitterly cold so he has to have a coat on when he goes out.
