Over the years I've not done so bad when it comes to working with computers, and most times I can eventually fix things up when it all goes pear-shaped.
Yesterday my Mac went not just pear-shaped but a complete fruit pudding with meringue and custard. Over the past few weeks it had been getting slower and slower until it said: "You know what? I can't be bothered anymore. I quit." And it did.
Fortunately there's a thing called Time Machine which regularly backs up the OS and all files to an external drive, so I wasn't too nonplussed.
Unfortunately my Mac refused even to start up. Missing its core thingies or something.
No probs - just re-install the OS from the original discs. Almost there - the discs were a bit out of date but I could easily update the version from the internet.
Went to restore all my settings, files, programmes, etc from Time Machine. Unfortunately my finely tuned and slimmed down original system had bloated by about 20GB when reinstalled - and my drive didn't have enough space on it to complete the job.
Grrr.
My backup drive (1TB capacity) is also getting full so it looks like I'm going to have to buy another to dump my data into, then give it all a good clean out.
On top of that, once you start messing with reinstallations, I find much of my work software needs reactivating from the software companies - it's going to take me absolutely ages to get back to where I was a few, happy and organised days ago.
I hate computers.

I know the feeling. I have a feeling that being a control freak like me is a good safeguard. I have always had an iron rule that if the FM was doing something I didn't understand or couldn't stop I hit the power switch, not simply the off button. That always cures it!
Big upgrades this week for Firefox and Ubuntu 24bit. Havent seen any difference but all seems to be well. Nice to know that good people are working out there to improve the system. Warm Glow!

My Orange connection was staggering this morning and failed at 06:30. Just tried it again and we are back on shortly after 07:00. This was the connection to the Orange server not a domestic issue.

My orange connection is very slow, especially in the evening. They have been doing something with the e-mail connection and that went on and off for a week, anyway it appears to have been rectified. Fingers crossed.
I'd be dangerous with a brain!!!!!

We're a couple of hundred miles from you and use a different ISP but we started getting temporary loss of broadband during the last week. Not enough to prompt us to contact the ISP but we don't know the reason for it.

Pre-empting the next question, here is the description of the changes and likely impact from the same site.
21CN Overview
Interesting to note that Orange is not in the list as an LLU operator, they must get their service off the back of one of the other two at the Barlick exchange or put up with what BT make available. Could explain the disparity in service availabilty.
Talk Talk currently 17.2Mbps at my location on the Croft.

Edited by - panbiker on 07/12/2011 13:21:30Orange stopped using the LLU kit earlier in the year. They billed this as "an improvement to the system", we're on IPStream now (up to 8MB if you're lucky).

Interesting use of the word "improvement" Kev not as I understand the meaning although it would seem that Tesco use it in the same way as well so it must be right!

Quite.... I protested vigorously at my personal drop from a solid 15mb to less than 6mb. Orange are riding on the back of BT and promised an improvement by last October. We are not holding our breath! I decided that since I was managing well enough I would simply wait.....

Fingers crossed, famous last words, etc, etc but my TalkTalk connection is consistently fast. (Average over 3 tests: 14780 Up and 776 Down)
Great improvement since replacing the USB wi-fi dongle for a much cheaper version! Never drops out nowadays (uh oh, that's torn it...) |

That's where Orange Users were Heather until a decision was made to cut costs by removing their dedicated equipment and coming to an arrangement with BT for use of theirs.

TalkTalk have had a lot of bad press regarding customer relations (which I also experienced) but once things settled in, I've found the quality of the service to be very good and the tariff I'm on now (broadband, unlimited calls, etc) is extremely good value.
