I recently had the pleasure of a visit to a mill in oldham earmarked for demolition soon!

the mill is called fernhurst mill, and i put together a small history of the site using (not for the first time) some of the information off this brilliant site!

the full posting by me can be read here... and that of my compatriot Ojay here...

as you can see (especially in Ojay's report) the mill engine house is bloody AWESOME and other than the addition of the toy boilers, is original!

now, my question is this, does anyone on here by chance have a photograph of the mills engine? i have looked everywhere all to no avail :( as well as any other information that may be usefull to further the history of this site...

 many thanks chaps

Hi, was there a Stanley Street Mill in Chadderton in the early 1900s. Just going slightly away from your topic, I remember going on a school careers visit to the Hawker Sidley factory either in Chadderton or Middleton in the early 1970s. After going round the factory looking at all the planes being made, we were taken into the canteen for tea and cakes. Very nice. I was at boarding school in Rochdale at the time. Can still remember it though and Chadderton too.

No problem Bungle, the pic was on the site, before my time,it was probably 1940/50s,ive had no joy with the engine pictures.

Cant find a Stanley st mill in Chadderton, but there was one in Lees.Oldham,it closed in 1929 and not long after the 200ft chimney collapsed and fell through the mill...think there was a Stanley mill in Middleton ,just off Oldham rd on the left as you leave Middleton town centre..

yea tom, i reckoned late 50s early 60s as theres cars on the car park! I also reckon the photo may have been taken as a pre chimmney drop picture before it was lowered to the square base, it seems odd there is no smoke coming from it, when the elk mill in the background is quite clearly smoking!

as for "sunray10's" question, i have done a little digging. and although there was no mill on Stanley St in Chadderton there was however a "wren mill" on the adjacent "milne St" the mill is basically under the ASDA superstore...

 HTH

Idea I believe there was a cotton mill at Park Bridge on the Oldham to Ashton road. This formed part of what was a Victorian industrial enclave - with mills, cottages, millowner's house and a canal. The Park Bridge Mill was powered by the River Medlock. The owner of the mill in the 19th century was one Samuel Lees. However, by about 1900 the mill was closed down and becoming derelict.

This is a photo of Dawn Mill Engine, I believe it was identical to the Fernhurst mill engine. Courtesy George Saxon.

Bungle - have to say I have often read the other forum you post on.  I have visited some of the institutions which are featured and have greatly appreciated the photos and reports.

Not that I condone trespassing of course Wink
