Any Boothmans or Boothman descendants here? My grt grt grandad was William Boothman, farmer, born Barnoldswick, 1825. I think his dad was also William Boothman, also of Barnoldswick and his mum Anne Waterhouse.  She was born at Arthington.

My William ended up at Homestead Farm, Roundhay, Leeds. He had several sons, including Jesse (racehorse trainer and stunt rider!) and my grt grandad, Tom, who owned Boothman's Dairy in Leeds.

William married Ann Coates of Wigglesworth. I know they were a big old farming family, so there have to be loads of descendants around and I suspect from what folk are saying on here, I might have relatives still up your way?  I would like to know more about the Boothmans in Barnoldswich, as most of my family come from the Vale of York which is easy for me to research, living near York but it is harder for me to find out more about the Boothmans.

Any info would be gratefully received.

Thanks, Stanley. Have done! Just thought I'd put this here so folk can find it easily as my post drops down the New Members' section. Hope that's OK?

Post where you like. If it's obviously out of place it will get moved to a more appropriate place.

Hello cousin!
My grandfather was Tant Boothman, born in 1893, the 12th child of David and Margaret (nee Dean).  David was born in1835.  David’s parents were William and Ann Boothman of Skirethorns, Linton-in Craven.  William 1773-1867 and Ann 1789-1875.  They had 7 children, 1.Joseph 2.Thomas 3.William 4.John 5.David 6.Hannah(Pullan) 7.Mary(Gill)

David and Margaret had 14 children and 29 grandchildren.  His descendants include Fred who farmed Lane Ends Farm in Barnodswick.

I did some research on Family search and came up with William Boothman and Anne Waterhouse married at Marton-in-Craven 10/6/1821.  They had christened at Barnoldswick  1.Joseph 2/6/1822 2.Thomas 31/8/1823 3. William 30/10/1825 4.Hannah 24/6/1827 5. Mary 12/7/1829 (I could not find a John).  Then David christened at Broughton (near Skipton) 12/4/1835.

So, we are both descended from the William and Ann who eventually settled in Linton, but lived in Barnoldswick during the 1820’s.

I have some more information about William and Ann from Arthington if you're interested.

Nigel

Yes, Stanley

Tant Boothman was my grandfather.  He was very keen on his horses; he went to the Somme with some of his own horses.  The pictures I have are of Tant with me on the back of a horse at New House Farm in the late 50's.  I was born in '54.  Tell me what you remember of him and his wife when you picked up milk from him.  You might comment on how the road through Bracewell is a lot easier for big lorries than it was in the late 50's.

Incidentally, Stanley, how old are you and how much longer can we expect you to continue to give such excellent commentary on all our comments

Nigel

Nigel, I'm 76 on St Valentine's Day 2012 (get it in your diaries!). I am aiming to live 'til I am 126, at that point I'll take a view!

Boothmans were the ideal milk pick-up. Milk always on the stand on time properly labelled and stacked tidy so there was room to get the empties off before chucking the full kits on the wagon. 12 gallon galvanised kits, 168lbs when full, exactly what I weighed at the time. Never any problems with the Boothmans and I only occasinally saw anyone about, they were at breakfast after milking. Very tidy yard  and no problems with traffic. The road was exactly as it is now but what traffic there was moved at a sensible speed. My waggon was a maximum size 4wheeler,bigger than most 4 wheel waggons today. No problems.

Was it West Marton Dairies you worked for?

Harrison Brothers at Elslack who did all the farm milk pick up and some of the bottle haulage until about 1965 when the MMB took over and a West Marton wagon did the early load which was the one New House was on.

Nigel, a couple of years ago I was contacted by the grand-daughter of Jesse Boothman, another son of William B. and Ann Coates. (I'd love more info about the Arthington folk by the way!)  Jesse also had a way with horses and was asked to go out and help train them in WW1 by Lord Harewood,.  My other cousin has some lovely photos of Jesse and the horses! Seems Boothmans were very keen on their horses. One of Jesse's sons became a well known racehorse trainer.  He had a big win and bought a farm, I'm told. Here on the Vale of York.

My great grandad Tom had horses pulling the milk carts in our dairy but nothing more glamorous in Tom's case.

I found his  dad William was a carter at some point before he came to Leeds and farmed at Roundhay. They did like their horses, these Boothmans. Was fascinated to read your post.

It's interesting that the Boothmans who emigrated to Leeds continued with dairy farming and dairies. My grandmother inherited the Leeds dairy and so its name was changed to her married name, Lister. In case there are any Loiners here who remember Boothman's (or Lister's) Dairy, in North Leeds. They were done out of business in the 1960s by ASDA.

I brought this back up as I have just been doing a bit of family research by way of light relief from my other work and came across this:-
My Great Aunt, Mary Jane Thompson born at Grassington abt 1866 was in 1871 aged 5 living with her Grandparents Joseph and Mary Boothman on a farm of 88 acres. Joseph was born at Barnoldswick in 1822. This is from Nigel's post above, "They had christened at Barnoldswick 1.Joseph 2/6/1822" They had two children of their own, Joseph and Ann. A further check revealed that Joseph seniors parents were William and anne.
