 Thanks Nigel

I'm reasonably certain that Ann and Robert Carr are correct.  The date fits well so anything else you have on her would be good.

Thanks & regards

You could make a guess about her parents from the names she gave her children, names often repeat themselves in subsequent generations.

I know we've discussed this before but I am often struck by the way a bald entry in the census can trigger off your ancestor detector in the back of your brain, very often by re-use of a favoured forename.  What often strikes me as useful is the use of the mother's maiden name as a forename.  One of the biggest barriers to understanding is the way a woman's family name is often extinguished on marriage.  There should be a convention that the eldest child is given the mother's maiden name as an additional forename.  Just think what a boon that would be.

Absolutely agree with that and could make for some very interesting combinations - my surname is Wild!

Any other thoughts on the Broughton connection?  And the Carr line?.  I understand there may have been a Carr's butchers in Barlick in the 1950s.  Do you know how far back that business went - I get the idea that Carr is quite a common name.

Try this, look for John Carr son.

CARR REFERENCES 20 July 2003

John, I’ve trawled my index for Carrs. Here are the entries:

Carr. Mrs Ann. 26 Wellhouse Road. (Barrett 1902)

Carr Anthony. Member of council 1923 to 1932. 1929 to 1932 (Chair). 1937 to 1949. (chair 1945/46). Died June 28 1957.

Carr. Anthony. Grocer, Newtown Barnoldswick. (Barrett 1902)
Ditto. Manufacturer in Butts Mill with 262 looms. MCED 1912. (M/c exchange dir.)
Ditto. Applied for looms in Butts in 1905, address given as Butts, probably because he was already a tenant in the mill which was owned and run as room and power by the Calf Hall Shed Company.
Tenant in Butts in 1903. (CHSC minutes 1903)
Ditto. Tenant in Butts and not intending to move (CHSC minutes, 29 Oct 1913)
Ditto. Vacated tenancy of Butts and replaced by Edward Aldersley (CHSC minutes 10 December 1913.

A Carr. Report in Craven Herald 12/09/1930. He stated that A&G Carr were continuing in business at Crow Nest Shed. They had woven out as part of an agreement with Crow Nest Shed Company. Once cloth stocks were sold the looms would start again. (This was most likely a move to get a reduction in rent for stopped looms while cloth stocks were reduced. SG)

Carr. A&G. Trading in Crow Nest Shed in report in Craven Herald dated 22/07/1932.

Carr. Betty. Spinster. Farmer at Crook Carr, Bracewell. Age 66, farming 155 acres with 2 labourers. (1851 census)

Carr. Elizabeth. Townhead, Barnoldswick. Unmarried. Hand Loom Weaver, wool. Son James, 2 months old. (1851 census)

Carr Farm. William Starkey, 15 acres. (1871 census) (SG note, this is almost certainly Carr House and not Crook Carr)

Robert Bradley Carr appears to have held the Post Office in Barlick in 1918. He had a printing press in the back room and his wife and seven children lived over the shop. His two sons Robert and Gordon took over and eventually founded Carrprint which is still trading in the town.

Carr. John. Greenbanks Farm. Age 41. Farmer of 20 acres. (1871 census)

Carr. John. Barnoldswick Hey (district round Hey Farm), Aged 56, widower, labourer. James, son, 26 Butcher. Elizabeth, 14, Power loom weaver (cotton). Richard W. 12. Winder. (1851 census)

Carr. John. Shopkeeper at Stock, Bracewell. (Baines 1822) (This interesting in that the village of Stock died as everyone moved into Barlick to work in the mills. SG)
Carr. John. Elector of Bracewell in roll of 1837. Address given as New House.

Carr. Johnson, Occupation drainer. House on Skipton Road Barnoldswick. (Barrett 1887)

New House Farm, Brogden.

Parkinson, Joseph. Paid land tax in 1753. 6s/5d
Smith. John. Paid land tax in 1760. 12s/10d
Ditto. Paid land tax in 1770. 9s/7 ½ d

Shutt. James mentioned as occupier of land and house at New House Farm in an electoral roll of 1844. Ditto 1848.

Given as address of John Carr in 1837 on the electoral roll of 1837.

1851 census names William Bulcock, 34 years, farmer of 440 acres, 4 labourers.

Corwin. Grace. 44 years. HLW wool. (1851 census)

Howard. John. 64 years. 420 acres. (1871 census)

Wright. Roger. Farmer. (Barrett 1896)

Shutt. James. 67 years. Farmer 50 acres. (1851 Census)

In my Birtwistle research recently I have come across a Roger Broughton born 1839 in Earby, he married Betty Birtwistle, sister of the Peter Birtwistle who left his fortune to Colne.
In 1881 Roger is a convict in Wormwood Scrubs, do not know what he had done.
Then later his son Harry was jailed for his part in a swindle at the Colne Building Society,

Moh, I've found this from The Liverpool Mercury, September 6th 1877.

THE FRAUDS IN THE WORSTED TRADE
Yesterday at the Preston intermediate sessions, the trial was resumed of John Dugdale, aged 22, charged with stealing a large quantity of woollen weft, 10,000 bobbins, and 50 skips, valued at between £500 and £600; and Roger Broughton, aged 38, and Nehemiah Kippax, on bail, charged with having received the same, knowing it to have been stolen. The prisoners were all found guilty. Dugdale was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour, and Broughton and Kippax to five years penal servitude each.

(Thanks to Melteaser for providing the link to a website giving access to many old newspapers)

Must have been one of the Earby Broughtons!

Actually I don't have a Roger born 1839.  Can anyone find him on the Earby census or in the parish records for Thornton?

There is a Roger Broughton aged 3 in the 1841 census. Son of Thomas (40, Cotton Weaver) and Nancy (35). They were living at Hilltop in Thornton in Craven.
Other newspaper reports at the time of the trial explain that Dugdale was a warehouseman for William Holland, cotton manufacturer of Nelson, and Broughton and Kippax were also manufacturers in Nelson.

Hill Top is on Manchester Road in Barlick and is often used as a location rather than a specific building.  Thornton refers to the census area which covered Earby, Kelbrook Barlick and some outliers like Admergill that came under the parish of Barlick.

Stanley, on the census this Hilltop is between Thornton Church and Crowbeckle, so it looks like it's the farm still on the OS map to the west of Earby.
