Hello Rattler, welcome to OGFB. I'm not RN or ex-RN but I'm interested in naval ships, especially the old battleships and the like. But I also enjoy the stories posted on here about life in the navy.

This was organised by a inivitive guy George Heron LRO who is no longer part of our merry crew.

It was fantastic afetr 30 some years it was amazing how you could find your way around..

Thanks for the welcome if you do visit the site there are loads of piccies of her and the ships company.

I will be paying more visits to this site in fact I will put a posting up so people can have a look see.

Many thanks again Rattler

Only thing I remember about the Intrepid was that she was late relieving us off Aden. Being on the first of class we had sorted the problems before Intrepid had started sea trials LOL

I remember Intrepid went out to relieve Fearless and encountered some kind of mech issue and never quite made as I understand.

There are a few guys who served on both L10 and L11 first commish and a few that went south in 82.

There has always been a bit of banter between the two ships. I understand that Fearless was scrapped in Belguim some time back I have seen piccies of her.

Not a pretty site nor was seeing the Intrepid pulled apart.

I served on Intrepid , Kent the D12 type 42 and Hermes. had some good runs ashore especiallly Malta!!! but we will say no more on that matter Wink

Catch up later

"Not a pretty site nor was seeing the Intrepid pulled apart"

Did you see the TV pictures of the Scottish trawler skipper whose family had always been in fishing and he had to take his trawler to Denmark and have it scrapped because of the quotas? He watched them use a massive pair of jaws to tear it apart. Very distressing.

Rattler, what a sad end for Intrepid and Fearless, both fine, noble ships. Intrepid was our son's first ship ( he joined the RN in 1984) I remember the  courtesy tour included Barbados and Florida, much to our lad's delight! We attended family's day when it returned to Portsmouth and what a great day it was, we were wined and dined and treated to fly pasts of a Nimrod and Sea Harrier. Brilliant memories!

On my topic HMS Victory there is a panoramic view of Portsmouth Dockyard, in the background are Intrepid and Fearless awaiting their fate, below is a closer shot:-

The next pic, is Intrepid alone after Fearless departed:-

Fearless went to Ghent in Belgium for re-cycling.
HMS Intrepid was bought by Leavesley International and was towed out of Portsmouth on the 13th September 2008 bound for Liverpool to be re-cycled. This was to be the first such project to take place with a warship in the UK. Her arrival in Liverpool was greeted in the traditional fashion with the cry of "Everybody Out"!! which after several repetitions caused the company to make a great loss instead of the intended profit, she was a COSAG ship with the attendant amount of asbestos. The HMS Intrepid Association managed along with a few other individuals to save several artefacts from the ship, the Associations website has more details and pictures: Search:-
HMS Intrepid Association and find the gallery. Below are two pics from another source, and not very pretty pictures either!
