I have just spent the last 3 full days digging out a formal herb garden,  laid out in a French style symmetry.( hence the bad wrist). Now I need to plant things quickly before all those weeds come back

I already have rosemary, thyme, chives, mint, lemon balm, marjoram, and lavender(multiple plants of each). Has any one any ideas about othe perenial herbs that can with stand  long periods with very little attention. The soil is well drained and very fertile. I have 8 symmetrical patches in all. Two are already filled. This year I am putting potatoes in another two of them , but I need some ideas for a long term permanent herb plot. I did think I would do one patch with annuals and biennials like parsley and basil.

I've never grown chervil, in fact I dont think I've even tasted it. Perhaps I should!

I've just been round my garden after the howling gales of the last days - flat!
Peonies, irises, campanula, globe artichokes, gooseberry, roses - the lot.  Anything over 18 ins.

But, coriander beginning to appear, and parsley.  No sign of chervil, yet.  But only sown a couple of weeks ago if that.

My hebs survived OK and the mint cuttings are doing well, even the ones I shoved straight in without rooting in water.  No shortage of mint next year!

Well it is 5 weeks since we last visited France. All was SMALL in the herb garden. This is what greeted us as we drove round the corner of the house. 6 feet tall fennel plants that had been cut to the ground on our last visit, chard  and rosemary in chaos ( now cut down). I must have composted hundreds of pounds worth of herbal vegetation, and still have more to do. Eat your heart out in Yorkshire!!!, as they say

My God!  My Rosemary is just three sprigs!  Mind you, the Ladslove is 50% bigger than when I did the picture and the mint I rooted and put out looks to be thriving.

Our coriander was suffocated by the sage and rosemary

I thought it was time for an update on the herb garden. This year has been wonderful growing conditions. Does anyone want some comfrey? It's growing like wildfire. In case you're wondering, the mint is in the back corner behind the lilac tree and the reason it's so sparse is that I have been cutting it hard and making mint sauce with honey and white wine vinegar. Lovely stuff!

Hello Stanley...Regarding Comfrey......I have a friend called Steve Povey who lives in Ulverston...

Was with him the other weekend , camping near Ingleborough , and he reminded me that he had lived and taught in Barlick for a few years in the '70s (can't recall his old address just now but will look it up).....

The last time we visited him on his present allotment he was enthusing about the benefits of liquid fertilizer made from Comfrey ...

He just puts it in a bucket covered in water and leaves it for "A bit".......(with a lid on)

Apparently it is a brilliant plant feed......The slight downside is that it smells REVOLTING !

Believe me.........................and he didn't warn me either, when he said  "Here, have a sniff at this........"

So if you have too much , maybe that's a use for it............( or secret weapon!)
