Hi

I am new here and I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question - but - ....

My Great Uncle owned a boat called the Rohilla. I have been told in the last couple of days that it was originally one of the life boats that was used in the rescue of some of the people off of the WW1 boat of the same name. The lifeboat was either bought by one of the passengers or one of the crew of the life boat. It was named The Rohilla in memory of the event.

If anyone has any information about this I would be very grateful if they could pass it on.

Best Wishes

Diana

Hi Diana and welcome to the OGFB site. Have a look first at this OGFB forum page (click here) which shows the memorial at Whitby and gives some web links to more information. (Scroll up/down the page to find the photos and links.)

Cheers, Tizer

This should tempt Calluna to come back up on deck. Come on Heather, you know you want to. Abandon those boring "what I did on my holidays" canal people!! Smile

Hello Diana, I am so glad you have come across such a bountiful website as this, especially with such a interesting first posting. I have a special interest in the story of the Rohilla, I wrote about the loss of the hospital vessel in 2002 and of my three books it is the Rohilla one that I hold so close to my heart. I am pleased to count a lot of people who have contacted before and after its release as close acquaintances. I am as intrigued by the Rohilla today and am often surprised by new information, I would like to say a big thank you to “Calluna” for alerting me to your posting.

Diana, your contribution is especially timely, as I have only just come across the very information you seek and was amazed to find out about the lifeboat.

The Tyneside motor lifeboat “Henry Vernon” travelled 60 miles down the east coast in storm force conditions to rescue the remaining fifty survivors after they had spent over fifty hours on what remained of the wrecked vessel. Some time after being released from active RNLI duty the lifeboat was sold on to a private buyer and she was renamed after the Rohilla. It would seem too much of a coincidence for there to be another such lifeboat and my feelings are that this is the lifeboat your great uncle owned.

As if fate had not dealt you a hand pointing towards this website I would like to add that the Henry Vernon’s treacherous journey has just been recreated by another of the lifeboats involved in that fateful weekend in 1914. The “William Riley”, a rowing lifeboat has just completed a full restoration and this was its first major fundraising venture with the proceeds being shared between the five lifeboat stations along the route.

“Only”, when you have finished on this website you might like to check out my existing website which has more information about the Rohilla http://www.eskside1.freeserve.co.uk/rohilla_dedication.htm and the pages on my upcoming website which has far more information about the William Riley http://www.eskside.co.uk/williamriley.htm I am only in the early stages of working on the Rohilla pages and am looking forward to adding quite a bit of content. I want the Rohilla side to evolve as I far more information than I included in my book.

I have a number of pdf files, which contain more information including a photograph of the former lifeboat your great uncle owned that I would be happy to share with you, if you would like to send me a private e – mail I will send them to you. If anyone else would like to see them I would gladly share them.

Kind Regards

Colinlolol

Colin, thanks for solving this puzzle and for the information and web links.

We like solving puzzles here and tend to vie for the chance to get in with the answers to things like this. I must say I did have a search after Diana's post and found web apges about the William Riley etc but couldn't find anything on this exact topic. So it's very pleasing to see the result.

I am looking forward to hearing from Diana as I I believe I have information she would find interesting. In the meantime I have extracted the lifeboat parts as the full pdf files are in excess of 19 mb. This is the first time I have added a photograph to an e-mail post and apologise if it could have been done better. As for this website, keep up the high standard of such a bountiful website.

Regards

Colin

The photo has come out fine Colin - what an interesting co-incidence Diane should bring this topic up.

I thought I would add to this topic as there has been some very important developments. When Diana started this thread I replied offering her my wealth of research but sadly she has not taken up this offer and a check of her profile has shown she has only made one post? During the course of my research I uncovered family relatives who had owned the former lifeboat, Henry Vernon which was later renamed Rohilla. It transpired that they had no knowledge of Diana on both sides of the family?

This has been quite an adventure and has opened some new routes of information. I have found the family members very forthcoming with information. I am sorry I have not posted more, but hope my abscence is forgiven with the upload of some new photographs.

No apologies needed Colin. Investigative topics are like that, they sometimes lie moribund for a while but then flare up again. If you click on the panel on the left it will throw up Diane's email address. Have you tried that?

very interesting topic in itself, but does this also mean that the "ankle biting canal lady" is still hiding in the weeds and watching us?

After hearing nothing from Diana I did try the e-mail but can only assume she had changed her e-mail?

The former lifeboat was renamed Rohilla and converted to a sailing yacht. It was chartered by a school for a two week sailing trip to the Channel islands. The first week went without any problems, sadly however on the second week the boat went missing with the loss of five schoolboys. I was recently contacted by someone who  went to the same school as the missing boys. It has been quite an informative contact and I have learnt more about the sad loss of the boat.

It has allowed me to create a new page for my website which can be found here http://www.eskside.co.uk/ss_rohilla/rohilla_lifeboat.htm I have a number of new initiatives linked to the Rohilla which helps keep me thoroughly entertained.
