I have just heard of the death of local man and historian Jack Savage. I believe Jack died last week and that his funeral is to be some time very soon, I would appreciate if anyone who has the details of Jacks funeral, times etc . could post the on this site... Cheers Gus

I loved going into Jack's shop with mum, he used to deliver our fruit and veg every week to the farm.
There were 3 brothers, Jack, Norman and..................

You amaze me. I thought he'd been dead a long time. Jack was a good man, council member, designed a suspect coat of arms for the town and wrote a tidy little book on Barlick history.

I was told Jack was 94 years old. I spent many a happy hour or two with Jack in the green street club, putting the world to rights over a few single malts. P.S. His other brother was John.

Dad, I can even remember Jack standing leaning on a little ledge above the fish slab writing mums order down. As you went through the door the fish slab was in front of you, the fruits to the left and the veg to the right and the potatoes were in large two tier wooden boxes. (sort of diveded shelves) Jack regularly used to cut us an apple up to eat whilst he was serving mum.
Jack always had a smile on his face, if we weren't in when he came to deliver the order he used to leave it on the shelf in the porch at the farm. Isn't his daughter in law the head mistress at Church school??

Of what Cath, the book? Yes, I remember Jack in his shop well. It's just the same as it was then and I think the son runs it, the one who used to work for the council.

Gus asked if anyone had details of Jack Savages funeral ... no-one answered so I suggested that Gus check the BETimes.

Stanley, if your talking about Savage's green grocer, isn't that owned by Towns now?

You're right Herb, it's young Town that runs it now.

The other Savage brother was in fact George and if I'm not mistaken he used to live on Taylor Street.
