Or BWMG for short. My eldest Niece was until retirement, Editor of a local newspaper. So I asked Her advice yesterday about how best to proceed when dealing with publicity, She has mailed the local paper concerned copied to me, something is in there that I was unaware of, this is copied from the e/mail:
"Hannah: A small group has been formed in a bid to have names missing from Barnoldswick's war memorial added.
Apparently there are 11 in total and much research has been carried out via newspaper archives with, I am told, some interesting stories.
As you are aware, there is a plan to move the memorial from the town square to the Memorial Gardens in 2012".

I have looked back through the appeal topic and the closest thing was the first reply in which one of our members expressed concern over the state of the Memorial and the Memorial Gardens, this is the first time I have heard mention of the Memorial being moved. If this is correct it would be the ideal time for additions to be carried out. The above figure of 11 names may yet increase, but I am fairly certain that the evidence I hold at present for those 11 will be acceptable. I will post the draft today although it needs a little more work, this is in effect a "Crib Sheet" for the press who will no doubt alter it to best suit their purpose, but the information it contains is as accurate as is possible at present.

Interesting Peter but I think this requires some clarification. I along with you I have never heard of a plan to move the obelisk to the Memorial Gardens. I think what it may be referring to is that it was mooted to look at the possibility of moving the Jubilee Fountain from the Town Square up to the Memorial Gardens to use as a centre piece. It was suggested I think by Cllr Whip as it would be in keeping with the plan to refurbish the Memorial Gardens in time for the present Queens Jubilee next year. It could be that the press do not know the difference between a fountain and a War Memorial and have not actualy bothered to cross check the facts.

I thought when I read the report that this would effectively change the focus of the garden from what it was originally intended and provided for, the memory of those lost in the Second World War to in effect, a garden refurbished in honour of past and present royalty.

I don't think there should be a case for the press to alter anything that we put forward for their own puposes. They are not going to go to the trouble of putting the effort in to check all the details so they will have to accept it as vebatim.

That is more or less what my Niece said, todays reporters do not seek out the facts like they used to.

This is what I have to date:-

The "Barlick War Memorial Group" or BWMG, is about a small group of people who have got together due to them having a common interest. As a result of recent research it became clear that the names of some of the Servicemen from Barlick who lost their lives in World War One, are not on the Towns Memorial, the aim of the group is to rectify this situation. The discovery was made during research for another War related event that had a large impact on the Town, the sinking of the Hospital Ship HMHS Rohilla. This tradgedy is mentioned in the book "Cravens part in the Great War", copies of which were given to those who had served and survived, and to the Families of they who did not. Looking through this book gave birth to the idea of producing a localised "Online" version, this is already in part in place on the local website: "OneGuyfromBarlick" and soon after another website was indicated that is an online version of the original book.

That website is CPGW or Cravens part in the Great War, much hard and painstaking work has been done by the group who set this up and I will include here a small part taken from the site that describes what was accomplished:-

THE IDEA

Like many good projects the idea was a very simple one. Chris Foster - a local man from Hebden - was deeply interested in the history and the events of the First World War. Family relatives - from the generation of his grandparents - had served in the forces and one of them met his death just over a week before the Armistice in 1918.

Growing up in the village Chris listened to the stories told by people who remembered earlier generations. His interest was further fuelled by visits to the battlefields of France and Flanders and, most significantly, by coming across a copy of the book Craven's Part in the Great War, which was published by the Craven Herald in 1920.

In 2005 he began to think of a way of not only preserving this remarkable document but also, if possible, updating it and adding to it. By the end of the year Chris had approached Trevor Croucher, from Hebden, (who has been involved in numerous local history projects involving the collection, correlation and presentation of data). He also enlisted the help of John Richardson, from Threshfield, (a man with considerable knowledge of the Great War and many years of experience in social and family history research) and Geoff Ryan an experienced photographer from Grassington.

BARLICK MEMORIAL

There are 285 World War One names on the towns Memorial, and cross referencing with that list it became clear that the new information gave details of over 300, all the names on the Memorial were matched and the remainder divided into three groups: Group "A" contains those who were born in Barlick and who's homes were here: Group "B" are the ames of they who were born elsewhere and came to live here, and Group "C" which contains those who's names require further research.

Who were they? Group "A" Private Arthur Green. Private Edmondson Pickles. Group "B" Private John Fay. Gunner Peter Barrett. Lance Corporal John Robert Nicholson. Private James Hargraves. Private James Wilson. Private William Dowd. Sergeant George A Golding. Sergeant James H Crowther. Sergeant John Wilson.One of these Men was "Mentioned in Dispatches" and was awarded not only the Military Medal, but also the Croix de Guerre.

What we as a group hope to do, is to get the missing names added to the Towns Memorial, this will require additional research, and an investigation into what help is available to achieve this. We would also like to thank Mr Chris Foster and his team at CPGW for allowing us to access the material that they have worked so hard to accumulate. Members of the group at present are:-

Mr. Chris foster. Mr Ian Lambert. Mr. Ken Hartley and Mr Peter Thompson.

During the research much interesting material came to light, there were transcriptions of letters from "The Front" some including details of action. There was even a poem written by a Soldier from Barlick:-

BARNOLDSWICK - THE BARLICK TERRIERS

By a Barlicker on Active Service

Here's to the brave Barlick Terriers!

Rejoicing their country to serve;

They rose to the call,

Left factory, shop and hall,

From duty they never did swerve.

Here's to the Lads. Barlick Terriers!

Who deserve all the gifts we can send;

Their pipes we will fill

With a right hearty will-

They can fight and we will spend.

Here's to the good Barlick Terriers!

Who're fighting with might and main;

We've no need to whine,

Their courage is fine-

May Heaven send them safe home again!

Here's to the tough Barlick Terriers!

Who know what it is to endure;

The foe they have checked,

Themselves they have decked

With laurels of glory, be sure.

Here's to our own Barlick terriers!

Who, refilled with true British pluck;

They cry "No surrender!

Our lives rather render"

To bring our Homeland good luck.

GUNNER H. STRETCH,

County Palatine Royal Field Artillery.

In other letters there are stories about the Sinking of the Lustania and the dramatic rescue of a Man who lost his wife in that terrible event, later to loose his own life in the War. There is much material that is moving, and personal to local Families, most of it has been seen before, but not by our generation. It is almost certain that there will be a time in the future when this kind of thing becomes irrelevant. Let it not be our fault

AN APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC

There are Mens names missing from the Memorial on the specific wishes of their families, and in order to ensure that what we are trying to achieve does not offend or cause distress to any surviving relatives, then we must be informed. If any of the readers have information on any of the above names that may be useful, or have concerns about their possible inclusion on the Memorial then please let us know.

UPDATES

After Christmas, updates will be given and contact details released with the addition of selected stories from our database.

I have just remembered another snippet about the Jubilee  Fountain in the town square. I'm sure that sometime earlier in the year Tardis reported that the question of moving the fountain out of the town square came up at a Town Coucil meeting. The reason given was that it would make more room on the town square for the marqee and other events held there. So from this point of view putting it in what will become the former Memorial Gardens would have double benefits for those that suggested it.

Your piece above is a good start Peter but if anything I think it may have a bit too much information in. I think we should also mention that we are intending to research all missing personnel including those lost in later conflicts. As it stands at the moment it does not mention this.

With regard to the OG personas. I dont think it is really nescessary to mention our usernames used on here in a press release. If we point the readers to the actual thread, anyone that takes the trouble to look should be able to work that out for themselves.

We could quite easily set up an email address for the group as first line contact and give this in the press release. We could also ask for any written replies to go via the paper although this could be quite messy as we will be dealing with more than one publication and may be making a rod for someones back in keeping track of it all.

I also think that a press release now may well be putting the cart before the horse so to speak. We do not yet have an agreed infrastructure in place to support our group. We dont want to go to the press piecemeal with our first release and then have to change tack when we have our group properly sorted and tasked.  I also think that it would have more impact as a good news New Year story rather than standing a chance of getting lost in the Christmas mele'.

Let's get the basics in place first and then go for it with a vengence once we are sorted out with who is doing what.

I'm off to photograph the 1939-45 facets of the memorial before the light goes. It will be easier to make a list up than writing them all down on site.

Peter, I'm inclined to agree with Ian on the subject of the release date of the article.I fear it will just get buried under the festive rush . Once we've had a meeting in the New Year to discuss our aims and objectives, its then I feel the article should be sent to the papers . I also agree that a new appropriately named  email address should be sorted  so one of the team can manage this and disseminate the information to the rest of the group.

Regards
Chris

I have 12 pictures of the 1939 -45 sections of the memorial. I had to do three on each side so I could get close as the lettering is not very distinct on some of the names. This section of the memorial certainly has not had any refurbishment done on it recently. I will use the photo's to compile an "already known" list so we can identify these easily in future searches of the newpapers.

I must ask at the library if it is permissible to take pictures from the microfiche. Again this would be quicker in the long run than transcribing information directly in the library. If we could take a snap of any information it could then be processed outside of library hours which may be benficial.

As I said earlier what I have written is incomplete, and no doubt the press will precis what is written anyway. The information on my database is all WW1 and there is much to do yet so I do not want to even think about WW2 until I have exhausted all possibilities for the former. The names staying as they are is fine by me, and I am willing to give my e/mail to the press to circumvent any problems, as I said, I have previous experience of what can be involved, and I do know how to deal with it. If you all want to hold the press, then fine, just let me know when you are ready. If at times I may appear to be a bit impetuous then I apologize, I was trained to do now what needs be done, not helped by a bout of what could be termed "Ill Humour" brought on by a recent MOD Navy announcement about something that I care about a great deal. This could engender a new topic "The Death of Nelsons Navy"!!! What I will do is talk to the press, but insist that it is not released without our permission, give them time to work on it.

Oh dear, the MOD Navy announcement seems a bit ominous. I hope you dont have to start a new topic Peter.

I dont think you are necessarily coming over as impetuous either. You have put a lot of work into this so far and it is only natural to want to press forward.

No one needs to expose (if that's the right word) their personal email address and I dont think you should. There are dozens of free email service providers around where we can go to get a suitable address for our group and the right functionality that will suit our puposes. We could keep it as web mail or go for one that will allow POP and IMAP access from an idividuals existing email client. A lot of the free mail clients have good spam and junk mail filtering and would lend themselves to our pupose.

I was thinking down the lines of something like"BWMG@........."

It's just a case of sorting which one of the "freebies" will be best for us.

Onto the existing memorial. I have typed up the names from the 1939-45 facets of the obelisk. I noticed something when looking at my pictures of the inscriptions.

Each face of the memorial has engravings arranged in banks of 3 x 5 names. They are aranged alphabetically starting at the front facing Wellhouse Road and progress antclockwise around each of the four faces. When you get to face 4 the listings get up to  T with (Thompson. J.), there are then two names (Alderson. N.U. and Bradley. J.) that are out of sequence. The alphabetical sequence follows on correctly after these two with (Walsh. S.) and the remainder of the W's, there must have been no losses with surnames of U and V. The two out of step are appended to the bottom of the centre block of the three lists on that face. There are only 4 names in that centre block as well.

These names must have been added at the time the memorial was commissioned and must either have been an oversight from face 1 where they should be or may well have only come to light after the list was commissioned but after the mason had already finished 3 sides.

There are an additional 5 names appended below the main 3 bank facet on the front of the memorial. The first and second of these are dated 1965 and 1967 the remaining three are not dated but must postdate the former as they progress from left to right on the front face. So it looks like we can deduce that 5 have been added after 1965, whether the 3 without a date were actually lost post 1965 or are earlier casualties that have been found remains to be seen.

We are in B.U.D.C. minute book territory there I think, so time and research will no doubt tell.

Thank you Ian, will you please post the pics of WW2 on here for later reference. Sadly we have just lost a member of this group, Colin feels quite reasonably that this is outside of His domain, I respect his wishes. I know all too well that the festive season is upon us, and I spent a Christmas away from my young family on the other side of the planet, surrounded by a people who's main ambition was to make as much profit from our misery as possible. We must remember that they who are the subject of this enterprise gave up their Christmases and all else for us. They did not take a break, neither must we.

Thomo,  I am more than willing to undertake any tasks for the group but feel that crerdit should go to those like yourself and Ian who have so far done all the work. Much of my time is taken up at the moment with doing a teacher training course which I hope to complete by spring next year. Nolic

Understandable Colin and best of luck with the course, I know you will keep an eye on us though, please pitch in when you can. Thank you for the comments also.

I will post pictures Peter but I will take them again before I do. I only did a quick shoot to get the names for my spreadsheet. The memorial was wet and I had to use flash on some to bring out the detail. Given better conditions I can probably get decent images of one for each side instead of the 3 per side I have now.

Peter,  just to underline Ian's comment, I don't think you've been  impetuous at all. You've put a lot of time and effort into this project and on a personal level I'm thrilled that the CPGW data is being used to help a very worthwhile cause.
 I would dearly like to come to the first meeting if possible and meet you all, but after that I see my role as a back room boy, with CPGW helping in anyway it can in regards to information we have on the "missing list" or any other area or aspect of the project you feel that we could  be of benefit  from a distance.
 I know I've mentioned this before but the last thing I want to do is tread on anyones toes. My opinions and suggestions are just that and nothing more.

Best Wishes
Chris

Its amazing how quick two months have passed, and I feel as if I knew these people. Now when I see the Memorial I can almost see the faces. Chris you are more than welcome to attend our first or indeed any other meeting, again it would be great to put a face to the name, I am sure that plenty of notice will be given and we are uniquely flexible, I hope you like a "Wet" as these things often take place in some pub or other. My next task is to streamline the database and get rid of duplicated items, in Naval terms, make it all nice and tiddly, then commit it to disc again.

Peter, I know what you mean, in a slightly different way, when I look at the memorial I reference the ones who I know are down at Ghyll by whereabouts they are in the churchard or cemetery. After a while it does seem to become as if you knew them.

I have this morning edited the press crib sheet and removed some items, this included the name of Pte Walton Pickover, having scanned the memorials of Kelbrook, Foulridge, Salterforth, Gisburn, Thornton and Earby I found him on the latter. This leaves 10 names now in groups A & B, none of which appear on any local memorial. I have replaced the original crib sheet with the updated version which includes an appeal to the public, I have left off contact details until I have spoken with the reporter, Hannah, who is coming to see me this evening.
