As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

Calluna used to call it a "gob iron". I think harp is nicer.

Tom, don't need them - just paint over your "accidents". Can't do that in watercolour though.
Nice painting Conty, flesh tones really good.. Nolic

Young Tom doesn't do accidents. It's against the jack's religion.

thanks belle, well spotted by the way i am studying Toulouse Lautrec and this is a copy of one of his oil paintings its called the girl with the red hair, im way out of my comfort zone here and i am not enjoying it one bit!!! id rather use pencils anyday
as for my GCSE'S im not holding my breath, i have been given a B for my coursework so far, cant begin to tell you how frustrating that is, ive just started another oil but in the same style as Toulouse lautrec but a self portrait, and im hating it, every second!! in fact i wish i could just give it up and just not bother anymore, mum and dad are pissed off with me as they say what a waste of talent but thats how my teacher makes me feel, why bother?

Forget the teacher, stick to what you know you do best and enjoy doing. In the end it's what you'll do anyway.....

Conty..the logic behind GCSe art is,it's geared to all who have enthusiam for the subject...but I think it discriminates against fine art, as does art college in general...take heart that many more people prefer Art that shows the skill of the artist, than the unmade beds of Tracy Emin...you certainly are worth more than a B ...you could always go completely beserk and paint everything in yellow like a friend of mine did at school..he always got A's and went on to open his own gallery in Edinburgh. But he didn't continue painting, all my friends who were A's have not sold any art...but i got a C and my last pic sold for £125 ...there's a future for you.

thankyou but i think i am just too fed up at the moment with my art teacher!! he keeps changing subjects and then going back to it, i dont know where i am with any of it. my headmaster promises me i wont have him next year so i will see next year otherwise im not going to bother doing A level, cant see the point, he keeps leaving the class to pick up his kids and gets me to draw for the ones that cant, then gives them A's ?????
anyway on the up side if i stick to what i love, i am now doing athletics, and i LOVE it... i am now avon county champion and ranked one of the best throwers of discus in the country for U17 boys, i won 2 gold medals yesterday and have qualifyed to go to uk school games, i am throwing 43 meters at the moment, but want to do better.
and ive also been doing some male modelling, i have a 3 year contract and have just done an advertising campaign, and that is ssooo much fun, hopefully it will make me some money!! i need to save up for a car, though i think the insurance will cost more than the car!!
anyway back to the drawing. mum and dad are paying for me to have outside art lessons with my old art teacher, she is lovely and i do enjoy my art still when i am with her, so i am hoping she will get me by untill my art teacher changes in september, the peice im working on at the moment is a self portrait, cant say that i am enjoying it but im slowley getting it done, i will post it when ive finished, but its not that great!! thankyou for trying to spur me on, i will try

Don't worry too much. It sounds as though you are a talented and perfectly normal person. Do what you enjoy most, explore all the avenues and keep your nose clean. All will be revealed inside ten years!

The good thing about Art is you don't need to have qualifications in it to do it! oops hope mum and dad don't black list me for saying that! Try not to let one failing teacher put you off something you have loved and done so well. I got thrown out of art (we are talking pre flood! ) between gcses and A level then forceably reinstated by the education authority, so was taught by people who disliked me to say the least and yes it put me off going to Art college..i did get a c in my A level but i had lost a bit of pep! I put the whole thing to one side for many years...but the thing is if you are an artist you can't just cut it off and thrive..eventually life ground me down and I couldn't work out what was wrong then someoen advised me to do something I loved and felt comfortable with..ooh yes..thirty years on i rediscovered my drawing hand. So you can enjoy your sport, and do all sorts and still come back to it..and if in between you start to feel a bit like summats up ..you'll know it's time to get those pencils out! But............. If you asked me know though whether I had any regrets at not continuing Art after school, i would say yes, I lost years and all because i let some bad teachers get to me and destroy my confidence.
