Yes you are C - dip into the topics and post as you think fit. Now't has really attracted my attention yet today apart from how mild it is outside. May get the boots on and do a hill tomorrow. Not bothered if it rains.

I'd love to be able to do that. Right now we have 40 inches of snow on the lawn, 8 foot piles at the end of the driveway, all covered in an inch of ice and more snow expected....... The boots and rucksack are gathering dust and cobwebs.

Commiserations Steve, that's a lot of snow. I love to walk the fells in the snow but know my limitations. I always go out fully prepared for the conditions but you can still get caught out with a fall. I am always more carefull when I'm out on my own. Having said that I have still fallen twice in the last year both on ice under snow, hard landing both times. winded and bruised ribs first time and knocked back finger (still a bit stiff) on my last foray. Take a look at the Favorite Walks and Rambles thread for some of mine with added stunning scenery.

I'll do that. Thanks Ian. No matter how much I walk on this side of the pond, my favourite walks are still in England. Next one is going to be the Ribble Trail, I think. Right now it's back to shovelling snow off the roof.

Re. Fridge. I sent this letter to Indesit yeaterday;"In August 2009 I bought a Hotpoint RFA 52P Fridge/Freezer serial number 902240145 from Garlick's, Church Street Barnoldswick (01282-811800). Registered 08/08/09 on your web site. It died yesterday after only 18 month's service. Faced with a freezer full of meat and despite being a 75 year-old person officially described as 'below the poverty line' I had enough money in the kitty to solve my problem by throwing £340 at Garlick's again to get a working fridge in my kitchen as soon as possible. I am now the proud possessor of the identical Hotpoint model RFA52P serial number 010220597 registered today.I haven't purchased any extended warranty for either appliance, I trust Hotpoint to make a machine fit for purpose. Please don't point out all the avenues I could have gone down, I'm too old to enter into a bureaucratic maze, all I want is a fridge that works. I've been an engineer long enough to know that even in the best manufacturing environment there can be rogue machines and this was definitely in that category.I just wanted the satisfaction of letting you know that I was badly served but am trying again! Hopefully you got this one right." I'll let you know what the response was. You never know, we might find a corner of humanity in the modern corporate structure. What grabbed me last night and this morning is that it is still raining. Water is running in drains that have been dry for over two years and Butts Beck is running a banker.

One method I use is to write to the Chief Executive and ask them if they regard themselves as a "quality" organisation and can test out their ability to respond by quickly dealing with my complaint. I then offer to write a testimonial for them if they resolve it quickly and effectively. It seems to work. Nolic

Just heard a Tory MP say "David Cameron is the best Conservative PM since Alex Douglas-Home". I choked with laughter but then reflected he might have a point, but it doesn't say a lot for either of them.

Re. Fridge: I don't suppose I'll be the only one to point this out, but as I read it on the web, EU law gives you a two year warranty on all electrical goods. Also I believe that your remedy lies with the retailer rather than the manufacturer. You may have some difficulty convincig Mr Garlick of this. As a former Lancia owner, I'd have thought you would have avoided anyhing to do with Italy like the plague! Buy German would be my advice - perhaps a bit dearer to start with but long term - no contest.

Steve, your favourite walks might be in England but if you want to see stunning Scottish mountain scenery watch out for a TV series that might come your way eventually. It's called `Men of Rock' and is presented by geologist Professor Iain Stewart. He describes developments in our understanding of geology from the 1800s, much of which was done by Scottish men both amateur and professional. All of it is against a background of fabulous scenery, some of it inaccessible without the aircraft they used and certainly many views would be impossible from the ground.

"As a former Lancia owner" This reminded me of what a Lotus owner once said to me "Lotus" Lots of Trouble Usually Serious

Whether or not David Cameron can make you choke with laughter he has at least said something that many of our countrymen and women have thought for a long time, he has stuck his head above the parapet of apathy and committed himself, it will be interesting to hear the response from Ed Moribund and Co. Multiculturalism may be fine and accepted as the norm in the big cities but in the larger expanse of the country it does not fare as well. That this country is, and for a long time has been a Christian based society is well known the world over and those who choose to live here must respect that. Britain has always made room for non Christian based beliefs on the assumption that they would not become dominant. I learned recently that the Town of Blackburn which for generations has been home to many of my family now has no less than 1200 Islamic places of worship, most of which are council tax exempt, I see this as an unfair burden on the indigenous inhabitants of that place, it is also probable that many other communities have the same burden. Whilst it may appear unfair and un-British that Islamism has been singled out as a possible problem, it is fair to say that the majority of those who come from Europe are willing and able to live amongst us without changing much at all in our infrastructure, they live and work here with little physical effect on their surroundings.

Thomo I wonder how many of the 1200 are actually residences? I agree with you.

Tizer, I do agree. By England, I generally mean the UK in general. Habit, I suppose, since most Yanks don't understand the differences. The year after it opened, I did the Hadrian's Wall trail, coast to coast. I had a day or two left over, so I rented a car and went up into Scotland to do some day hiking. Never made it to the highlands, but around the area of the Hermitage was some stunning scenery and not a sign of civilisation but the castle itself.
