If anyone wants a larger copy of any of the photos that I(OR STANLEY) post, for wallpaper etc, just let me know and i can mail them to you.They are 2304x1782 so are quite large.
Also if there is a particular photo you want of the local area you want taking WE will happily oblige.

For a long time now I have been scanning negs into the hard disk. The aim is to get them all digitised eventually. This was a fairly slow process until I got a faster Canon scanner which scans six negs in 12 minutes at 1600dpi. I have done all the later negs which I wanted for my books and have gone back to the beginning of the neg files in 1974. I'm up to 1976 now and what triggered me to write this was that yesterday I moved out of the old negs of pics taken with a Russian Zenith camera into the ones done with my first real camera, a Leica CL. The difference in image quality is amazing and it is now a pleasure to scan the pics. There was something about the Leica lens which Nikon and Olympus never captured. Instead of using optical tricks Leica used sheer perfection in lens grinding. Lovely and I am really enjoying myself now. The other thing that strikes me is the number of pics I shot, a real trip down memory lane. The message is clear, get snapping and look after the files, in thirty years you will give everyone a lot of pleasure.

Cheap Russian cr*p vs expensive German stuff should show a big difference. Zeniths only took pictures approaching sharp at F16 or F22.......

Yes Stanley, the Leica lenses are a bit special. The Summicron especially so.
Zeiss's equivalent is, of course ,the Planar. When I was "in the trade" the Leica representative had an explanation that went something like .......
The best Japanese lenses are formulated for absolute sharpness , but contrast drops off as a result. European lens makers tend to opt for more contrast ( and therefore better "edge definition") and not for extreem resolution.
Apparently you can't have both.
He also had some interesting things to say about top quality Binoculars , and how to sell them.
Given the choice ,many customers would plump for greater magnification , thinking that , say 10X were better value for money than 8X ...etc.
I was advised to point out that the more "wobbly" image you see through the more powerful glasses is difficult for the brain to handle, and that one's own "telephoto vision" compensates when the image is steady and smaller with the less powerful.
An example of "telephoto vision" could be explained by asking the customer to think about watching a TV from across a room , and how long it would take them to "forget the surroundings" and to be able to "get into" the images.
The strong advice was , if the customer was not going to use a tripod, then DON'T sell them 10X glasses (they would inevitably be dissatisfied )....8X being the maximum recommended for hand holding.
It appears that with binoculars, it is not possible to produce an absolutely distortion free image (as it is circular).
The makers can get quite close , but what little distortion remains must be accepted........Leica go for "pin cushion" (concave at the edge)..and Zeiss go for "barrel".....(or was it the other way round).....but both companies accept the other as being of egual quality.
PS The other thing that makes lower powered binoculars easier to use , is the size of the "Exit Pupil" ( the "white dot" in the eyepiece)....If your own pupil does not line up with the exit pupil , all you see is blackness. So the bigger the better.
It is a physical (optical) fact that the size of the exit pupil is a function of the magnification and the diameter of the front lens. The bigger the front lens, and the smaller the magnification, the bigger the exit pupil.
SO......7 X 50 s are a joy to use , whereas 10 X 20 s might go in your pocket, but they are a pain .
Sorry to all those who knew the above already...but I hope it was helpful to those who didn't.!

Ah the good old Zenith..... got three in a draw somewhere. When the shutter dropped it sounded like the end of the world. I always appreciated the sheer engineering quality of the Leica. But for me, when the time came that I could (at a push) afford one - I just couldn't bring myself to spend all that 'ackers. Had the same problem over a Vincent motorbike and a Morgan car - never had any of 'em.
My follow up to the clunky Zenith was a tiny Rollei B 35 pocket camera with a superb little (licence-built) Zeiss spec. lens. It was an amazing little thing ( £45 at Dixons I think) and some of the respectable resulting slides have appeared on OGFB.
