I have just heard of the sad passing of an old friend,  and local Landlord James Arthur Broadhead. Jim was a born and bread Barlicker who worked at Rolls-Royce before taking over the tenancy of the Rising Sun at Blacko, Jim and his wife Margaret, then moved from Blacko to take over the Fosters Arms in Barlick in the early eighties.  My wife Mary and i spent many a good time with Jim and margaret, over the years, but, sadly lost touch somewhat, Jim has suffered some ill health in the recent years but, always had a ready smile on occasion when we met. Jim will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and i take this opportunity to pass mine and Mary`s sympathy on to Margaret and Graham, his wife and son.

Latest ploy at the Dog on Manchester Road is two rather forlorn palm trees shivering on either side of the door.  Outside!  Bit optimistic on a day with yet another frost.

The traditional pub, and traditional pub landlord, is slipping into history faster than we can imagine. It always was a trade where you had to work hard to earn a good living. Nowadays, the pub chains seem to hold all the cards.

Learnt the other day (from Radio 4) that Bass is now owned by one of those American giants who brew that sort of Yankee beer that always reminds me of the taste of brake fluid. What we used to know as Bass is now brewed under contract by Marstons. The world is turning upside down...................

You have the advantage Thomo!! Daft though isn't it?

You're quite right Gus. Give it a few years and the art of conversation will be dead. Today people seem to have a plug in every bodily orifice and never hear the sound of life going by. OK, I'm a dinosaur.

Having been previously offered tenancy of the Fosters Arms by Pubmaster, this when Jim and Margaret were retiring. I was amazed to recieve an e/mail four weeks ago asking if I was still interested in becoming the landlord.

Hahahahahahaha!

First you'd have me standing for local councillor, now local publican - both of which I'd be utterly useless at lolol

No, I was just commenting on the fact that it was interesting. Nothing more, nothing less. At least, nothing I can say on a public forum...Go to Top of Page

She woudn't be able to see over the bar..........  Mind you, she'd be OK as a bouncer!  I can remember the day when publicans were respected members of the community almost on a par with bank managers and teachers.  Those days are long gone....

I seem to be one of the first to know the late James Arthur Broadhead. I have only just learnt of his passing, and am very sad about it, We went to school together for years. He wasn't born in Barlick at all, he moved here after losing his Mother in a housefire in Trawden. this was a very sad business. His father, Walter, later , married a barlick girl, Kitty Peckover, who was very well known in amateur dramatic circles.
A great loss

I think this is so sad. Its a lovely building. Isn't it listed as it must be very old. My family lived there when it was a farm.

Sad indeed. It is listed and dates back to the seventeenth century. What is left of the farm predates the rest of the building by about thirty years.
