... more like dreaming if I'm being truthful but say I had £800 - £1000 to spend on a new camera, what would I buy?
I've narrowed it down to the Canon EOS 600D or Sony A55 but there may be other models out there which are better.
I would want just one zoom lens to cover a wide range, because I can't be doing with faffing about changing lenses and probably dropping them, although I'm aware such a lens will adversely affect the picture quality to a small degree. But I'm not going to be turning professional photographer so it doesn't matter too much.
I would also need to include a good bag/case, plenty of memory and battery power in that price, perhaps even with a tripod thrown in.
And would I dare buy it on tinterweb or should I play safe by going to a local shop?

On a whim I entered a couple of photos into the Pendle Open Art Exhibition and both came 2nd: "The Walker" in the Photography category, Judges' choice and "Bancroft Mill Ghost" in the Photography, Edited category, Popular choice (just missed out by one vote, I believe).
What I'm trying to say by reporting this is just that it shows you don't necessarily have to have an all-singing all-dancing camera to achieve success.
This, however, hasn't stopped me whingeing that I would surely have won 1st Prize if only I'd had a better camera 
Sadly, this cut no ice with the Home Accounts Executive Officer, and I must be content with what I have.

The more you do it the better you get .......
(It's definitely not the kit...John Blakemore made a series of images with "Brownie " type cameras he bought from my "Bargain Box"......the prints still sell for £hundreds....)

It is a lovely photo. Looks like she has worn a bit of a path across there!
Now, if that was MY Mother, I would have to rename it "Dear Lord, Here she comes again!"

I decided to follow Gus and set the D200 to RAW and I'm delighted with the results. About 30mb per exposure so it's a good job we have Terrabyte hard disks! Time I did some serious Barlick Street pics, it's a while since I did my record shots.....

Make sure you have the relevant RAW converter or the images will be "pants"...

I think I have Kev. I found the Gimp recommended converter and dowloaded it. The .xcf image comes up in a separate editing window and reverts to the normal Gimp window when you have made your adjustments. I don't understand histograms, is there a simple explanation?

What's the name of the package Stanley? I searched for one and installed UFRaw but when I tried it on some RAW pics they didn't seem any better than the correpsonding JPGs. I know little about handling RAW images so it's probably just that I'm doing the wrong things. As you know, I'm a bit distracted by other issues at the moment but once they are sorted I'll probably get back to some photography with the new camera.

Have a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm_IPhOSMLM it should give you an idea of how to read a histogram.

I have been enjoying taking some 3D photos with my Sony (NEX-5) and susequently playing them back on our TV (with 3D glasses). It is 'another world'.
(am always grateful to enjoy today's technology. thank heavens I wasn't born 100 years ago. Love my gadgets!)

It is really good fun, Stanley. It is the technology that is impressive, not me. (the 3D glasses leave me feeling slightly queasy actually...don't notice it while wearing them but feel a bit sick when I take them off...but I shall persist for the pleasure they bring!)

I sold my soul on eBay and have raised some funds.
I might be able to afford a Canon 600D if I manage to get a good deal from somewhere.
Should I go for it - or should I still consider other models? There's a secondhand Nikon D90 on eBay, for example - about £350 last time I looked.
