As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

Tripps, I'm picking him up from college today so I'll oin him. You have me a bit worried about my estimated distance there. I have an eye for 100 metres and it seemed about half again. Mind you I've caught 10lb trout that seem to loose half their weight by the time I get them home and weigh them !  Nolic

Paced out Dans throw on Bullholme to about  104 metres - about 111 yards. Somewhat shorter than my estimate but not bad. Now to get hold of a cricket ball. Nolic

nolic this will help dan, get him to have a look at this link, it gives you all the results and rankings you'll ever need to know, its brilliant and really easy to use, click on the year then men.. what age group you want to see, then what sport on the bottom, these are the uk rankings of the top 100 sports athletes in their sport, it also gives you the info of their personal best, when they did it and where, so it will give you a good idea of what dan could do, after what you said about dan throwing a ball maybe javelin would be good for him as its kind of the same technique, as the javelin throwers that i train with throw heavy small balls training in the nets, just a thought...  http://www.thepowerof10.info/rankings/rankinglist.aspx?event=DTU17M&agegroup=U17&sex=M&year=2010

Now then Conor! About the porridge? It's no good in the cupboard! Small handful in bowl, another small handfull of sultanas, top up to half a bowl with milk and microwave on high for 3 minutes. Stir and leave to set. That will stick to your ribs and give you slow release energy all morning, no need for any nibbling or snacks. One more thing, soft drinks belong to the devil, water is the only thing worth drinking apart from good tea and coffee. Hardly anyone drinks enough water, I try to remember to drink half a pint every time I want to pee. Sounds daft but it's a good reminder and means you keep your intake up.

Builders' houses are always in a state of disrepair, plumbers' pipes leak, car mechanics drive noisy old bangers...like your mum they are all too busy earning a living!

When my dad was a lad in Australia his dad used to shave the lad's heads once a year when they clipped the horses. I can remember him doing me when I was young and my mother burst into tears. I still cut my own, I can't stand my hair long and as soon as it gets about an inch long I run the clippers over it and take the lot off. It's actually very good for your scalp. So grab the clippers Conor and have a go at it, much cheaper than hairdressers...

Thanks for the video, im sure they will be of use for me, espcially the warm up ones. When I fling the ball for Smelly (the dog) my hand and wrist do give me a bit of jip.

I threw shot for my high school couple of years back in year 9 (I was 14 or 15) and wasn't far from 10metres, but that was with, I presume a lighter shot than normal. Although with that in mind that was 4 years back so I must be a bit stronger than that (only a bit though)

stanley my haircut only ever costs me a kiss LOL

dan- the shot put would of been lighter back then, under 17 is 5kg and the under 20 is 6kg.  strengh is a major plus when throwing but so is very fast feet and the main thing is technique and balance. i must admit i thought it was easy when i first started at school as i could beat everyone but then you start to learn properly and there is so much to it that you dont realise, i am currently the shot put avon champion but i am rubbish at it as i dont have the bulk, discus is what i love. why dont you try all of the throwing disciplines when you are uni, what your dad says about you throwing a ball sounds like javelin would suit you. though the coaches will soon tell you what will be best for you, good luck

Conor, thanks for your response to Dan. I'll tell him to have a look as he doesn't come on the site regularly - and after the joke he posted I'm glad about that!! Two interviews for him this week - Warwick and Liverpool. So as well as finding out about the courses, women, accommodation, music, rugby, football, cricket he now needs to find about about athletics - gives him something else to think about. Nolic

Connor, your comment "I don't have the bulk" made me smile, having been a child who did, my cynical take on Athletics when I was at school was "give the fat kids summat to chuck!" But secretly I quite enjoyed having something I could do well in, having run through the hurdles so many times ( i stopped even attempting to jump them after the first few times), run at the high jump bar decelerating and muttering "if God wanted me to jump that he would have given me legs like a gazelle! my athletic performances were usually met with groans of disapproval from staff and students alike, so imagine my delight when they gathered round me supportively just to watch me chuck a put accross a field.. I went on to javelin... but to be homest the novelty had worn off, i had other fish to fry, and found a contemplative fag in the gym loos a better way to pass an afternoon.
Of course I grew up and realised smoking was a mugs game and exercise could usefully prolong your life, so it wasn't too disasterous an ending.
