Or BWMG for short. My eldest Niece was until retirement, Editor of a local newspaper. So I asked Her advice yesterday about how best to proceed when dealing with publicity, She has mailed the local paper concerned copied to me, something is in there that I was unaware of, this is copied from the e/mail:
"Hannah: A small group has been formed in a bid to have names missing from Barnoldswick's war memorial added. Apparently there are 11 in total and much research has been carried out via newspaper archives with, I am told, some interesting stories. As you are aware, there is a plan to move the memorial from the town square to the Memorial Gardens in 2012".
I have looked back through the appeal topic and the closest thing was the first reply in which one of our members expressed concern over the state of the Memorial and the Memorial Gardens, this is the first time I have heard mention of the Memorial being moved. If this is correct it would be the ideal time for additions to be carried out. The above figure of 11 names may yet increase, but I am fairly certain that the evidence I hold at present for those 11 will be acceptable. I will post the draft today although it needs a little more work, this is in effect a "Crib Sheet" for the press who will no doubt alter it to best suit their purpose, but the information it contains is as accurate as is possible at present.

The new tools I have at my disposal are a bonus indeed, very good at lifting the fog of time. I have full evidence now for six of our primary candidates and am working on the seventh, this is Sgt James Wilson. Our other two Sergeants George A Golding and James H Crowther have now become George Abraham Golding and James Hartley Crowther. Onwards and upwards, back to work.

Out of those Peter, I know the resting places of thirteen of them. Seven are not on my list although I do commemorate quite a few more who are recorded on family plots and who may well be buried in foreign fields. The section of the cemetery in use at the time has a lot of bare ground now where headstones may well have been removed over time but may well contain the missing from your list. Pendle may well be able to help here for those in the cemetery but we would need access to the church records for the churchyard.

Thank you Ian. A shadow of doubt has now fallen over two of our candidates, Gunner Peter Barrett, I can find nothing to place him in Barlick, and Private James Wilson who's Father was resident at 7 West Ave, Barlick does not return a match in the 1911 Census, he could have been a lodger somewhere. With that in mind, so could Peter Barret? All of our other names show positive in 1911 and match with all other info.

Thomo, according to Peter Barretts enrolment paper's dated 2 June 1916, his place of residence is listed as No 4 Parrock St Barnoldswick and was employed as a Cotton Twister. He died of pneumonia at Salonika 18th June 1918 . He names his next of kin as Mrs Gertrude Barrett (wife) living at 30 Wellington St Nelson. I hope this helps

Happy New Year to you Peter.
I've taken a look at the 1911 census and Peter Barrett along his Father and Mother and other sibling were living at 11 Chatham St Nelson. It states that most of the family were born in Glusburn apart from Peter and a younger brother and sister were born in Cononley .
It also states that Gertrude was Peter's elder sister and not his wife as I stated in my last posting

Peter, I've taken a look at the 1911 census and at that period James Wilson was living in lodgings in Great Harwood Lancs, working as a Cotton Weaver . His parents John and Mary and two of his siblings were living at No 7 West Avenue Barnoldswick . Whilst we can't confirm where James was living at the outbreak of war ( I haven't managed to find his Army Service Record which would have given us his address. I suspect it was destrroyed along with the majority of the other Army Servce Records during the bombing of London in WW2.) Its a guess that he would have given his parents name and address as the address of next
of kin . So the link to Barnoldswick could be a tenuous one.
James is commemorated on the Great Harwood War memorial

In those days many people took up lodgings near work, James could have been with family as he was born there. It is also possible that Peter Barrett was lodging on Parrock St along with his Sister. By way of a change I have been poking around in your patch today, looking for ancestors in Linton and Grassington, I found one but the rest have as yet eluded me. Many thanks for your input Chris, its hard going and I still have another eleven possibles in group "C", and when that is sorted I will be going through the other 285 that we have on the memorial, and then there are the other local areas Earby, Kelbrook etc, but thats for the book planned for the future. As always however, there is a time limit on that one.
