I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while. Let's see how it goes....
Asked if he was in charge of the nation, in the absence of the Prime Minister - Mr Clegg told Metro: ‘Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that.’

I heard that as well and have great difficulty in believing it. If it's true it is shameful and perhaps explains why the response to the Libya situation has been so bad.

Did you know that the Americans invaded Tripoli in 'The First Barbary War' of 1805? No- neither did I till a few minutes ago. Thanks to wikiedia.
From the Halls of Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean: We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine.

David, I always wondered where the name Tripoli came from in that song but never enquired into it. Thanks for that!

While you're worrying about the future, how much of the present has passed?

Mervyn King Governer of the Bank of England...... "He accuses them of routinely exploiting their millions of customers. “If it’s possible [for financial services firms] to make money out of gullible or unsuspecting customers, particularly institutional customers, [they think] that is perfectly acceptable,” he says. It's quite staggering to hear the Governor of the Bank of England saying such things!
I've had a bad cold and been missing sleep and I woke late this morning. The first thing I heard on the radio was someone saying "If you sup with the devil you need to use a long-handled spoon". I think it was all about the `arts bodies' in Britain taking money from Middle east potentates and the like (and Gaddafi).

Tiz, it was a report questioning who the bright spark was who thought it was a good idea for the Duke of York, our royal arms dealer, to invite people to the palace who were known to be criminals. The informant was a diplomat who knew the man involved. LSE wasn't the only institution 'supping with the devil'.
Here's a quotation for you: (Speaking of a translation he had made into English of 'Cura Pastorali', the 'Shepherd's Book') "I will send a copy to every bishopric in my kingdom..... I wish them always to remain in their place... unless they be lent elsewhere or anyone makes a copy."
[Alfred the Great. (849-901]
