You are quite correct Frank , I let Herb's comments upset me.....and reacted .
However my response was not intended to be glib . ......It was accurate.
I WAS literally lost for words.
Herb is entitled to his views ,but he completely misunderstood what another contributor had ACTUALLY written, and took the opportunity to air some pretty unsavoury stuff.
If I had written such a well thought out piece , and found that someone had tried to hi-jack it , I would be LIVID !
It would be interesting to read ANYONE'S "fun one-liner" response to such a glaring error.

Frank's 2000 post has obviously given him a superiority complex Bradders, don't remeber any rules on how you should word your post...the only rather stretched rule is keep it clean enough for young readers..if we have any..so whatever Frank was telling you off about I'm sure I don't know..perhaps he read your post differenlty to the way I did! I now feel I need to research the whole site to see if there is any truth in the statement..'we don't have a history of glib responses on here'...but perhaps that's a bit glib of me! Give Frank a prefects badge, his last post certainly earned one!

Frank's 2000 post has obviously given him a superiority complex.
I do like it when someone can spot talent LOL
I wasn't telling anyone off, it's the nature of oneguy It's not like an online debating forum which can and do get heated. I think what I am trying to say is that comments just sit here they don't scroll up the page.
That's all Sulks off to the corner polishing his new Prefects Badge, If that is a promotion from Clasroom Monitor it only took me 54 years to rise to the dizzy heights

Stanley I don't think I suggested isolation with regards to immigration, I suggested being more selective. I did say that I agree with you, but not for historical reasons, simply for the now.
Thomo, thanks, I guess I could be the first to be blackballed for having a point of view that may seem "of the track", if so, so be it.
Bradders, hope you are having a better day, we don'y have to agree, but we do have the right to express our opinions. cheers

"There May be Trouble Ahead" / "Home Secretary"
Neatly linking recent posts.....Did you know that Inving Berlin's second verse for "Lets Face the Music and Dance" goes.....
Before the Fiddlers have fled....
Before they ask us to pay the Bill....!!!
And while we still have the chance
Let's face the Music and Dance
....?
According to the chief political reporter on Radio 5 Live , there is a lot more ferilizer going to hit the ventilation system, fairly soon ,on the subject of who claimed for what, as MP's expenses.
That could explain why certain big names are keeping a bit stumm at the moment.
As to the leaking of this latest "titbit" (oops sorry ! ) ......
Brown did it to deflect attention from G20.?...No....No....too fanciful ....or...mmmmm.

Oh Dear... Something in the water? Nobody gets blackballed for opinions on OG. It takes a lot more than that. I think it's only happened twice and they were both by popular consent.
Of course, She is Home secretary, posting early in the morning does that for you! 'Tory Mole in whip's office' was the theory put forward by a contributor on R4 Today. Personally I think it is more likely to be the provider. I agree about the fact that I don't see why we should be paying for an MP's internet connection. The MPs have got themselves into a real bind with this one because nothing can be done to change methods of remuneration before a new parliament. The MPs have been their own worst enemy by refusing to allow the remuneration process to be totally transparent and allowing a truly independent committee to address the matter. In particular the effort by most of them to ban FOI on themselves while it applied to everyone else was a mistake. Argue as they will, anyone who gets paid from the public purse should be open to scrutiny. I'd include all company directors of public companies in this as well. It's about time we got rid of the canard of 'commercial confidentiality'.
As for Godron, some very interesting facts about the government's public attitude to offshore investment trusts and tax loopholes as opposed to who they have sold government property to and tax not being paid in Private Eye. There is a disconnect between the two. Also, by taking control in banks who actively run offshore services for their weathier customers raises some intersting ethical questions.

Bradders, nice one about the fiddlers!
Frank, I never even made it to Classroom Monitor - but then I did get permanently banned from Geography for losing my homework book. And I'd been near top of the class in Geography until then. Eeeh...it were a `ard life in them days!

FRANK .... MILK MONITOR ?....You were lucky...(oh no ...not that one again!) we 'ad t' mek doo........etc etc..
Do you remember how good chalk was at soaking up ink ?
And how some poor s*d got the job of cleaning out the inkwells ?
Does take you back eh!
STANLEY .....The "something in the water" is a worrying undercurrent......
and when it comes to the surface , it spoils .
I make no apology for drawing attention to it .
So they can opine away......but lets hope it's kept legal.
PS.. On his most recent album Steve Earle has a track called "Living in a City of Immigrants"
It's worth a listen and can be found on YouTube (recorded on Later with Jools Holland )
One of his earlier songs is called "Come Back Woody Guthrie" (Christmas in Washington) and is an absolute masterpiece !

Bradders, as an immigrant with a Jamaican wife living in Canada, I have learned to be very careful about the water I drink. By the way does the latter exchanges mean I won't get my CD now? cheers!

Herb...that reminds me that on our recent holiday (to Tasmania) we were shocked to see notices up everywhere saying "Do not drink the water unless it has been boiled for 5 mins". Yes...well...boiling the water for 5mins is very hard to do in a hotel room that has an electric kettle with an automatic switch off when boiled! I kept boiling and re-boiling the same water (drove Febby insane) until there was barely enough in the kettle to make coffee. When I pointed out the notices everywhere he said " Oh...that just means that any water you are going to drink cold needs to be boiled for 5 mins...but you have boiled it already for having as coffee." Huh? Am I stupid or is he? It clearly says %mins (not 3 mins or 4 mins) so that amount of time must be needed to kill whatever problem is in the water regardless of what temperature you drink the ruddy stuff. I stuck to my original interpretation and kept boiling the kettle everytime I walked past it, just to annoy him!

They were just erring on the safe side Maz. Anyway, you haven't mentioned getting gippy tummy so it must have worked!
I see that the 'Tory mole in the fees office' rumour has been attributed to the HS's friends. But now we have news from Sir Stuart Bell that someone is trying to flog a dossier containing all the expenses (or a memory stick?) for £300,000.
My advice to the MPs is to forget the official enquiry, this can't be booted into the long grass. They should have an emergency debate and make all the expenses public immediately. The vast majority have nothing to fear, the shysters will be exposed which is just what should happen. This will trigger huge public debate and some minor inconvenience but nothing like the damage being caused by this running sore. The newspapers are in dire trouble and chasing sales. The details will be made public this summer anyway. It looks like a no-brainer to me.
There is of course another dimension to this. If Parliament isn't capable of managing the petty cash efficiently, how can we trust them with the family silver?

On the water boiling front if I remember correctly, you need to have 161 F to kill all known bacteria in a water supply !!!
