Okay where to begin.

I would like to trace my family history back to Scotland if indeed that is where we originate. I can find a lot of general info like what clan my family name belongs to and trace the McGregor clan back for centuries. I am hoping to get some info on more recent events but I have no idea where to start. I moved to Oz a few years ago and as the relies are passing away it seems more important to pass this information down to my sons so they have some idea of where they came from.

My family name is McNee which is fairly uncommon, My father (Thomas) was born in Liverpool and lived in Melrose (by Bank Hall station) his Father (another Thomas grew up in Liverpool but I am not 100% he was born there as his Father (yet another Thomas was a sailor in the merchant navy). Actually from what I can tell every male in my family is called Thomas, both my aunty and my sister married a Thomas. Apparently there is some connection with the USA (bizarrely involving Fay Wray although that could be a family Myth)

Can someone point me in the right direction of where to start trying to unravel this mystery.

Ian, I'm sure you will get some responses. Start by putting up everything you know, start with mother and father and give as many names, dates and places as you can. You will get help!

Hi Ian
Do you have the year and month Thomas was born ??, that would be the starting point, Ancestry can take you back to 1841 and Parish records before that. also Free BDM here http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl Lancashire BDM here
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ and parish records here
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Colne/index.html

hope that helps

John McNee b. 1870 Scotland
Hector McNee b. 1874 Liverpool
James McNee b. 1877 Liverpool
Clementina McNee b. 1879 Liverpool
Thomas McNee b. 1882 Liverpool.

1901 Thomas is living with brother John at Ascot St. Liverpool - it says John is born in 1877 Liverpool!!
John McNee b 1877 Liverpool
Margaret McNee b. 1879 Liverpool
Donald McNee b. 1893 Liverpool
Flora McNee b. 1899 Liverpool.

With the daughter called Flora it looks like same family!!

I googled Fay Wray - she was born in Canada in 1907, her family moved to Arizona when she was 3 and then to Salt Lake City when she was 5.

FreeBMD births -  McNee,  Liverpool
Hector 1873
James 1877
Clementina 1878
THOMAS 1882 - volume 8b page 9 (you can order these from GRO on FreeBMD - which as it says is a free site).

If  this is your Thomas it looks as though the family moved from Scotland to Liverpool between 1870 & 1874.

This is awesome. Thankyou so much for your help. Thomas John is another common name combination for my family.

My fathers name is Thomas Mcnee born Liverpool 8 March 1936. He also had a sister Philomena (I think thats how its spelt) Their father Thomas married Bridget ?.

The Fay Wray thing is tenuous but aparently one of my great Grandfathers Brothers emigrated to Canada and Married her Aunt. Its not much of a link but Family histiry is like that.

The links given. Do I just type in the names and see what happens. Are parish records on the web as it would be great to find dates for marriages etc.

Again thank you so much. Its amazing how much you miss family when they are no longer just down the road. I should have found out more from them when I had the chance.

Ian,

You might want to ask for your Christmas present early!  A subscription to www.ancestry.co.uk would be very useful for you.  Don't forget to ask Santa for a good family tree programme.  I have always used Family Tree Maker and it suits my purposes well.  I would highly recommend getting software - as your tree grows, it can get a little out of control!

Also, for census information in Scotland (because ancestery have not been given permission to show the original census returns for Scotland), you can use http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/   They also have a lot of early parish records when you get that far back.

1911 Census

42A Elias Street, Everton, Liverpool

Margaret McNee         31        Liverpool

Donald McNee           13        Liverpool

Flora McNee               11        Liverpool

Thomas McNee           8         Liverpool

Clementina McNee     3         Liverpool

Emma McNee             1         Liverpool

No sign of Thomas, but Margaret is not shown as being a widow, so presumably Thomas was at sea.

Thomas McNee (your grandfather) married Bridget Fay 4th Quarter 1930 West Derby, Liverpool 8b, 848

As mentioned above, you can order the certificate with this information via http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Got fed up of editing the above post:

Philomena was born 2nd quarter 1931 Liverpool 8b 61

Thomas was born 1st quarter 1936 Liverpool 8b 781

Flora McNee married Joseph Edwards 2nd quarter 1926 West Derby 8b 635

They had at least two children (freebmd is not complete): Donald Edwards born 4th quarter 1926 West Derby 8b 936 and Joseph J Edwards born 1st quarter 1929 West Derby 8b 945

Just go to http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl and start typing names in!  But as I said = freebmd is not complete yet, so don't be surprised if you don't find someone you are expecting to find.  Check again in a month, as it is updated monthly,
