One of my father's sisters, Mary Dinsdale, married Ottwell Lodge; who as far as I know was a butcher in the Stockport or similar area of Manchester in the 1940's. Never knew him myself, but have this newspaper cuttting amongst my papers. Transcribed as I have it, there are some pictures that I can't reproduce :
The Lodge family of Northfields Farm
The stone for the new Tosside Community Hall came from the remains of Northfields Farm, vacated like many others with the building of Stocks Reservoir. This is the story of the family who lived there - with thanks to Margaret & Jeff Lodge of Langcliffe.
John and Isobel had 10 children, the eldest was John (born 1st. Oct 1908) then Tommy, Stanley, Mary, Richard (Dick), Grace, Daisy, Nellie, Ottwell and Matthias (born 1919 and died whilst still young).
The family lived at Tenters Farm from 1908 until 1918, moving to Northfields Farm in that year until 1928. Northfields was a very remote sheep farm on the Tosside slopes of Whelpstone Crag. The only two children born at Northfields were Nellie and Matthias, the others were born at Tenters. Isobel died at Northfields in 1921 at the young age of 34 years, believed to be pregnant again at the time of her death after having given birth to 10 children in 11 years.
Tommy Lodge's quote about Northfields is "It's the last place on earth that God made and he forgot to finish it".
Life was very hard for the family and, after the death of Isobel, three of the youngest children, Daisy (5) Nellie (4) and Ottwell (3) were sent to an Orphanage at Culceth, near Warrington and later to Padgate. Daisy stayed there until 1929 when at the age of just over 14 years she left to go into farm service for the Dinsdale family at Kelbrook. She was not aware at that time that she was part of a large family of ten as there had been no contact from the older members of the family.
Tommy (4) and John (6) went to Dalehead School from 'Tenters', walking for about one hour to get there, a distance of some 4 miles. Each day they trudged through the fields, past White Hill House and over a stream on one of two bridges (one for horses and carts and one for pedestrians). One day Tommy fell off the blue flag bridge into the stream and never made it to school that day!
Tommy recalls, at the age of ten, going to Settle with his mother, Isobel, some 5/6 and bringing home a large bag of flour (probably 28 lbs). She carried it on her back all the way to Northfields. The older children also attended Tosside and Rathmell Primary Schools. Tommy remembers the Headteacher of Rathmell School, a Miss Phoebe Elizabeth King, emigrating to Australia at the end of the First World War in 1918. John Lodge Senior died in Setlle in 1959 aged 71 years. (end).
On a personal note, do remember my father 'summering' cattle at Tosside in the 40/50's, and going up there with him; so maybe he had contacts with the Lodges. he certainly had Ottwell Lodge as brother-in-law.

There were still Dinsdales farming at Kelbrook in 1960s.

 That would have been my Uncle Bob, who removed to Bell's Farm at Thornton in Craven.
I think one of his sons now farms near Barlick (Rainhill?)
