Like many of you, I have been using Microsoft Office software for many years now and have become quite adapt at using this suite of various software packages.

For the past few weeks I have been putting the "OpenOffice" software suite through its paces and can happily report that it is a brilliant alternative to MS Office.

OpenOffice is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

On 13 October 2000 Sun Microsystems donated the source of StarOffice to the open-source community. Sun remains the project's chief sponsor and contributor, though the project can now boast contributions from Novell, Red Hat, Debian, Intel, and many other large and small companies, plus the very important and numberless contributions from independent developers, NGOs, and government agencies. All these have made OpenOffice.org not just a free alternative productivity suite but the best and most advanced productivity suite. And also a great community.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 Is Here
OpenOffice.org 2.0 is the productivity suite that individuals, governments, and corporations around the world have been expecting for the last two years. Easy to use and fluidly interoperable with every major office suite, OpenOffice.org 2.0 realises the potential of open source.

With new features, advanced XML capabilities and native support for the OASIS Standard OpenDocument format, OpenOffice.org 2.0 gives users around the globe the tools to be engaged and productive members of their society.

Visit http://www.openoffice.org/ to view the full specs or to download the software.

p.s. The OneGuyFromBarlick website software  is "Opensource", although I have modified it conciderably but you to can download the basic software, it is available at www.maxwebportal.info.

My sister and brother in law used to work for Sun Microsystems.  That is where they first met.

There's a bit of Harry in that software, I remember him telling me about working on it.

Looks very promising, though I think I'll wait to see what the reaction is from other Mac users before I go ahead and install it on my machine.

I never install any program that has a version number ending in .0

This release just goes to show that intelligent, thoughtful programming and development IS possible, making communication between different types of computers no problem at all, and I hope it gives moneygrabbing Microsoft a right kick up the processor.

15 years ago Harry was telling me that the biggest tragedy was that a Unix based universal OS wasn't developed.  The best one that MS have is of course Windows NT which is just that.  The new freeware programmes based on Linux are the nearest things we have to it.  Hew once told me that DOS= dirty operating system......

Doc, many thanks for this. I recently bought a new PC and only has "Works" on which is a bit limited. I've downloaded OpenOffice and it seems fine. No doubt Gundred and Dan will give it a bashing over the next few days and let me know what its like. Nolic

I'm sure the subject of 'word processing' and/or 'word processors' has been brought up on the site somewhere before, but a search of both found nothing

From WORD PROCESSING and/or WORD PROCESSORS ...... I thought I had seen something before ...... Used the wrong search words.
