A freebie from the Government, whatever next!

I have just been issued with my New Lifetime Radio Licence, according to Ofcom I no longer have to pay for my Amateur Radio Licence, all that is required is to remember to validate it once every 5 years via the internet!!!!!

Failure to validate in this way will lead to automatic revocation of the licence.

I wonder who thought this up, seems like a good way of killing a hobby. Enjoy the next 5 years!

Nothing against the CB fraternity, the modern equivalent of the jargon is probabably "text speak" as used on mobile SMS (it's interesting to note that most mobile manufacturers announce reception of a text on a mobile in good old fasioned morse).

The point I was making was the infrequency of the validation requirement.

I suppose I could ask the hairy horologist to make me a clock with a 5 year alarm function.

What do you reckon Andy.

You'd probably be as well pinging him a PM Pan. He doesn't frequent the site as often as he did.

Imindoors was a member of MADARS. Having just had a quick look, they haven't updated the website much since it was created.

Will do Mel, I don't think I have seen him in person for maybe 3 or 4 years, paths never seemed to cross. We used to have quite few common interests.

Would it be more acceptable if the government charged a licence fee, renewable every 5 years, at least it would be less troublesome ? than car insurance reminders every year!  Come on guys its free how can you bitch? If its too much trouble to renew and you need a reminder every 5 years don't do it.  Sometimes the government cannot win. maybe we are just too damn lazy!

Over the years, the UK Amateur Radio Licence has been passed from pillar to post between various government departments. When I was first licenced in the late 70's it was still administered by HM Government Home Office, it was thenpassed to the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and then to it's present admin department OffCom.

In all this time I have never heard any Amateur Licence holder complain about the price attached to the licence, (and I've spoken to quite a few over the years). The "freebie" is irellevant, I and I'm sure lots of other licence holders feel the same.

I would gladly continue to pay for my licence on an annual basis rather than get it free and loose it if I fail to validate. The 5 year validation is a joke. Can you honestly say that you could remember to renew so far into the future?

I only know the TV licence & the road tax is due because of the reminders. And lets face it, the only reason reminders are sent out is because they want our money. It comes as no surprise that there is no reminder for something free.

CQ Pans  - pay me what your licence would have cost you over the next five years, and I  promise to remind you when it is time to revalidate. In fact there must be a nice little business there as a revalidator, for those AT's who have bad memories. Dragon's Den here I come!!

Being a Yorkshire Tyke, I would need a free trial first before entering into a deal of such magnitude. Send me a PM as a trial in 2012 to prove your worth and I may consider the offer for 2017.

Fair enough. I'll be in touch. You're not doing a lot for Yorkshire stereotypes though! It must be true what they say.

Hi Brian, not sure what you would have to do if you have let your licence lapse, I assume under the current conditions that you would have been notified of the changes if you had continued to renew. I would have a look at the OfCom website to see what your situation is.

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc/

This link will allow you to check which licences you currently hold, you have to register, you should be able to get at the info you need if re-activation is possible. the licence for current holders became free at the beginning of the year although the holder has to re-validate every 5 years which was the original point of the thread.

I got my Marine VHF license earlier this year, but I still had to pay the £15 administration fee, I want to obtain my Long Range HF/MF ticket next year, there is a 5 days course over in Liverpool which I want to attend.
