Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.
As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.
He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!
[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs. His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history.... he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault. He had too bad a start.....]

We met a very smart little dog, who looked just like Jack, out on Weets Hill on Saturday afternoon. It was all alone and heading confidently in the opposite direction to us, but stopped for a chat. Its collar tag said "Duck Pond Cottage" and not having a map with us we just assumed it belonged to the house we had just passed, by the gate at the top of Gisburn Old Road. I've just looked at the map and realized we were wrong. I hope this little dog isnt missing from home, is it one of your neighbours Doc?

Yes, it was Beth, a little black patterdale bitch that often goes on walkabout when it escapes from Duckpond, it knows these moors like the back of its paw and where every rabbit hole is too.
About twice a year we send a search party out looking for it but more often than not it just turns up at its home.

Cath, garden is fine. Must go out and pick the cat muck up though. BJ went out this morning and had enother big pee. He's getting pretty good at this keeping clean in the house.... Very small accident yesterday when he got excited but nothing to worry about, I'd left him too long. He doesn't seem to mind weather......

We use to call BarrowfordJohn "BJ" but he ain't been around for a while, I hope all is well. The new "BJ" is Black Jack

BJ Barrowford is too busy doing his Oxford course, he'll be back.... He won't mind being associated with Black Jack.... Bit of an accident yesterday but nothing to do with keeping clean in the house or any fault of Jack's. I had to go to the diabetic clinic at Park Road surgery and was away for about half an hour. I made the mistake of leaving him in the kitchen. Even though he'd just had a run and his breakfast he had a panic attack and chewed the sheepskin on the computer chair to bits. Not good but understandable. He hasn't eaten anything since. He's all right and will come to but the mistake was mine and I have apologised. I've been working him up to short spells of abscence when I go to the supermarket but this was a step too far. I have noted this....... I think Doc may get a call when I have to go to the clinic next........

It may be silly, or you may be doing something similar but we leave the radio on so that Sam the Spaniel has some company.
Measure with a micrometer.

Wonderful. I am in the care of Rachel who took my barbed wire stitches out a few years ago in a very sensitive area so we are pretty comfortable with each other. I am about to deliver my urine sample for albumen, she has beeked me into the clinic at Butts for retinoscopy and foot examination and checked my latest height and weight. Interesting thing is that they have my 1972 H&W on the system and I am an inch shorter and only a few pounds heavier than I was then. My vertebrae must have cruched since then as they fuse. Arthur Morrison always said that God would cure my back if I gave him time.... Impressive service and I can go to see her any time I have a question or a worry. Lots to be said for the NHS!

Good luck with the retinopathy Comrade. The stuff they put in your eyes so that they can see the backs is horrible, not painfull but it widens your pupil and throws your sight out for a while afterwards. Nolic

No probs Comrade. I've had it before. Nowhere near as bad in the old days when you had to sit wearing dark goggles for half an hour after drinking black coffee. Things have advanced a bit since then.

Comrade, went for my retinopathy check last night. I've previously only had my optician do it and its about a 10 minute process as she actually scanned the back of my eye herself and made her own diagnosis.
This took 20 minutes in total and most of that time was just waiting for the drops to work. The people doing it are technicians who take a pic of the back of the eye which takes less tan 2 minutes.. The qualified specialists then look at the pictures sometime later and have up to 6 weeks to tell you if there's a problem. Think I preferred the old set up but that's progress..... Nolic
