...Frabjous Day.

Whaddya think?

In case you aren't familiar with The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, here's a Wiki clicky: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabberwocky

We can't keep the name Helen's Drum as Silsden will be calling their replacement boat by that monicker. We had toyed with 'Rosa Calluna' but felt it was a bit fey, complicated and a right mouthful. 'Big Bertha' failed the relatives' test...

As Frabjous Day is one of my fave sayings when I'm happy, and Jabberwocky is an off-the-wall poem so it matches our personalities,  this is now  likely to become the boat's name. We have to complete the registration form by Thursday.

"this Signwriter and Canal Artist was brought up on Lewis Carrol."

Grand!

Thanks to all who've offered help. I think the van & man will relieve a lot of pressure on Thursday morning, but if anyone was going to the tip tomorrow (Wednesday), we have a small amount of non-heavy stuff that needs to go (eg batteries and a small box containing bits of cardboard for recycling). I'd walk round with it but it's just a bit too much for me to carry and by the time E gets home from work it'll be dark.

We've now reached the stage where we just want to curl up in a tiny ball on the bathroom floor and sob our hearts out, but unfortunately we haven't time.

I might not be accessing OG regularly over the next few days so if I don't respond to PMs and topics that's why.

BTW: I can't post pics anymore since the website was 'improved' - at least, not without a great deal of faffing about. As a Mac (Safari browser)  user I'm not important enough to merit any time spent ironing out the difficulties I've had, by that I mean that we account for only a small percentage of people who access OGFB so obviously Doc is going to concentrate on the majority (IE users) - didn't mean it to sound like I'm whingeing again.

Anyway, that's why you're not getting any boat pics or any more of the Broadhead collection.

It might be worthwhile considering, however, that "Quality" is more important than "Quantity" - who comes first in the order of priorities, an IE user who posts one pic and is never seen again, or little old me - a minority that posts quite a few fairly interesting things...?

"(Safari browser)"

Speaking as one who tests software on all sorts of weird and wonderful platforms for a living, have you thought of giving Firefox on Mac a try? For personal stuff I gave up on IE or any of that MS garbage long ago, and on UNIX and MS I use Firefox exclusively.

Might be worth a thought...but AFTER the move! Changing software is stressful enough - on top of a move I'd end up heaving the PC out the window (and I've done it....twice...).

And consider me a definite vote for Frabjous Day - it's a perfect name.

Hi Alan - Yes, I have to use both Firefox and Safari to get the most out of the site. One will do what the other won't and vice versa.

I think Microbore stopped trying to do an IE version for Macs at version 5 - it was crap anyway.

Glad you like the boat name. I was on a canal forum earlier and someone moored at Snaygill near Skipton said to give them a shout as we pass by on our way back to Barlick. Somehow I don't think I will though.

Their boat is called Pysorph... Go to Top of Page

Hiya Christy - long time no hear.

Well we did go for Frabjous Day in the end despite the superstition that it's bad luck to change a boat's name.

Bad luck? Us? Not noticed any bad luck at all...

Unfortunately the majority of people respond to the name with a puzzled frown - evidently Lewis Carroll and Jabberwocky aren't as well known as we had presumed.

As we've got to know the boat better we think we might go back to the original name of Bernulf. I mean, how much more bad luck can we possibly attract? Don't answer that...

We haven't had the boat signwritten yet (waiting till after it gets its whole new paint job at Silsden in a few months time) so maybe we'll take a chance.

Does that mean "Rosa Calluna" is back in the frame? That was my favourite.

Hmm. Maybe. But we felt it was a little obscure - and it would cost more to signwrite (I am a Yorkshire lass, don't forget...)Go to Top of Page

I liked Frabjous Day, but if cost is an issue, how about calling her "!"

And in case you're wondering, that is pronounced "!"

Interesting one, sign-writing. We had our favourite French village, where we used to stay a lot, trouble was its name was Hardcourt aux Bois. The signwriter (a Yorkshire Lass!) was paid by the letter...so we finally chose Travis. She got us back by charging for the airbrushed "infill" on the panel, Ah well.

If you come from Lancashire and know your canal history, you may find where the  "Travis" name came from.  It wasnt really a cost saving excercise...honestly.

I'm going to have a go at putting some photos of the boat on the site.

Andy
