The BBC's attitude to product placement / advertising has long puzzled me.  I saw a newsreader tie himself in knots a while ago in order to avoid saying 'Marmite'  .  About a third of the rest of the programme was devoted to plugging stage shows, books, concerts, which seem to be exempt from any controls.  I have little doubt that money changes hands behind the scenes - they used to call it 'Payola'  in the record plugging days.   help - I'm changing into Catgate......

A friend drew my attention to this latest frightening situation:-

It looks like we are in for some more dampers on the world situation.

Cast your minds back to how Saddam Hussein ran rings round the UN and world pressure while continuing his internal repression. In the end it was frustration with his methods which triggered the mess we got into. That's where the danger lies. You can't stop a knock on the door by the spooks or abductions and torture with aircraft. The sabre-rattlers are feeling very confident that they have made progress. I don't buy it, as soon as force is used the backlash argument will start, the West interfering in a sovereign state. We've tried that one before...... As one of my mates once said about army service, "The idea is fine but the execution is bloody horrible".

Things might not be as clear cut as they seem. (Surprise!) Bengazi under heavy attack and Reuters is reporting a plane down as well.

All that happens in the Arab world is that you replace one religious dictatorship with another one. Like Stanley intimates Leave them alone to get on with it, or take the lot off them !!!!

Catgate, you're wicked, we've got enough problems with so much of the population believing in ghosts and space aliens without you frightening them over water under another name. (But I have to admit enjoying the web site!)

Talk about deja vue! Report this morning that 110 cruise missiles have been launched at 'military installations mainly from US ships but some from HMS sub  Trafalgar. French have attacked ground forces near Beghazi and the AC Charles de Gaulle is moving into position off the Libyan coast. Do you think someone has asked the question "Can we get the Ark Royal back to sea?"  I heard someone ask what happens if the libyans park their tanks next to civilian dwellings. Are all the missiles 100% accurate? The next phrase we will hear is 'collateral damage'.

The question is what has changed? We sat there watching these repressive regimes operating and did nothing. Could it be that destabilisation of energy sources has some bearing? Forget about 'no boots on the ground' some hawk somewhere is going down the old route, take Gadafi out and if that fails from the air, go in and get him. Where we end up depends on how that question is answered.

Tiz, I remember years ago in the early days of the net there was a spoof site that warned that world supplies of silicon for 'silicon chips' was running out. Amazing how many people fell for it.

Stanley why would we need the Ark Royal ??
I think you need to get your map out !! Carriers are only useful when you don't have landing facilities near to your  Zone. Remember when Maggie and Ron bombed Libya they flew direct from the UK.
Fuel for fast jets only really becomes an issue if you are in Dog Fights with a defending Air Force otherwise it is just Tankers.
Cruise Missiles are the way forward with pre mapping from Spy in the Skies over flying the area.
Technology has moved on quite a long way even since the Iraq Invasion.

I don't know about the Ark Royal but they have given a 3-month reprieve to the last of the Nimrod reconaissance planes so that they could be used. As well as the `Charles de Gaulle' they would have used Spain's aircraft carrier... but it's `out of action', no money left for it to put to sea. Sorry guv, we can't have a war, we're out of cash.

Tickets for the Olympics - watch out if you intend buying tickets online, Visa has been appointed as the official Olympics credit card company for tickets and it is using its monopoly position to great effect. First off, it refused all attempts to pay with credit cards that would expire by the end of August 2011 and that glitch had to be corrected. Now ticket orders are being taken online but the customer is not being told if they have been successful, so they don't know if/when a payment will be taken off their card and for how many tickets or how much money. Talk about a scam!

The death on Friday at 72 years of age  of Terry "Jet" Harris has been widely reported on today.

Jet Harris was the original bass player with The Shadows and was supposedly the first to play electric bass guitar in a well known band in Britain. After he left The Shadows he had a number of hits with Tony Meehan ex drummer of the band as Jet and Tony. RIP Jet. Nolic

The Shadows anytime one of their records are played you know in an instance it is " The Shadows "  not many records of today will be remembered 50 years on.

 I was appalled by this:-

From whence cometh their wealth??

It is a wonderful example of people getting their own back.

I've still got my copy of "Diamonds" by Jet Harris & Tony Meehan. Was it really 1962?

Tiz, I saw the same report. I didn't know about the Spanish carrier, at least they still have one!  French should be told they don't need Charles de Gaulle on station, our experts say it's a waste of time. Isn't it funny that a missile has hit Gadafi's admin building.

I note that some of the Arab signatories to the UN motion are twitching a bit. They say that a missile attack wasn't what they were expecting.  Ah well..... Did you see that Gadafi has renamed the Cruise missiles 'Crusader missiles'? Pushing all the buttons. US getting twitchy as well, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives has asked for more information about the end game. Good question, perhaps the planning hasn't got that far. It's a mess and it shows no sign of getting better. You can'r wage partial war and you can't pull back either. I see nothing to cheer about in any of this. We've turned a difficult situation into a no-win one.
