I once used a referees whistle (and blew for all I was worth) when we were getting nuisance calls several years ago. They weren't 'telemarketers'.....just your sub-average, drunken drongos. I am not usually so nasty, but we were getting a lot of calls in the middle of the night and I had had enough! I couldn't reason with these people, who seemed to have our phone number tatooed on the back of their hands.....or have us on speed dial or summat...so I deafened them instead.
get your people to phone my people and we will do lunch...MAZ |

All these overtures, no matter how they are delivered, are looking for a reaction and possible interaction. Therefore the best thing to do in all cases is ignore them and don't resp[ond in any way. Just sever the contact. In the end you get less overtures.

As far as I am aware it is illegal (in WA) to use a whistle over the phone.......I heard this on the radio the other day.
Maz have you registered on the new website here in Oz to stop getting nuisance calls.....not sure what the site is as I haven't done it yet.

One of my family justs quietly puts the phone receiver on the desk, and goes and gets on with her day...they don't usually bother her again. I know of two people who were bothered by constant wrong no. calls, one had a phone no that was one digit different to the doctors surgery, and the other one digit different to the taxi service...both of them got so fed up with people insisting they had dialled the right no. they came seperately to the same conclusion, and could be heard, having had their attempts to explain it was a wrong no. overruled, saying sweetly "What time would you like your appointment/taxi for?" ...
I once had a telesales person hang up on me! They were phoning from abroad and after I said 'I don't buy over the phone,' they said "What makes you think I am selling you something!?" to which i replied "well, you don't know me and I don't know you , so why are you phoning me up?" apparantly that so offended them they slammed the phone down!
