As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

You read my mind Ros, I was about to start a thread for pencil drawings and pen & ink myself to put some of my dads stuff up. Sorting out my scanner drivers first though. I like your offerings, very good, are these your dogs?

Yes, Ian.  Max died 5 years ago, Kal joined our family shortly afterwards and is still very much with us!!

It would be good to see your dad's stuff - I like pencil drawings, they can carry a lot of feeling.

..... and whilst I'm at it, here is another one found recently in the bottom of a drawer, so it's a bit marked. It is of our daughter as a baby 39 years ago (and if you ever meet her don't tell her I told you that !!)

Got my scanner sorted and I'll start with this one from my dads 1940/41 sketchbook.

Pencil Sketch

The picture is called "Devotion" and was done when he was in Iceland in 1940.

Marilyn has just said what i thought ! the detail and everything is lovely . This must of taken some time to do and its beautifully done. My Dad  did some sketches during the war which were good  . He was in the Army as a Captain and wrote and illustrated a diary which has never been published, it was about working in india through the war.Go to Top of Page

Thanks for the comments, I have some more pencil drawings, various scenes of the mountains and glaciers in Iceland but they are in a larger album and may not fit on my A4 scanner. What about your Dads sketches Flutters? the more the merrier.

This is probably the last of my efforts - it may as well go up here although it hasn't copied very well.  If I remember correctly it is of a Glenfiddich rose picked in our garden in 2001.

This is definitely NOT one of my efforts - much too accomplished!

It is part of an original pencil drawing of Chester Castle signed by a lady called Emily S. (or it could be J. or T.) Lister and dated 1820.  The actual drawing is twice the size - there is a lot more to the left, but my scanner can only do it in two halves.

We found the drawing earlier this year when we opened up an old framed oil painting acquired many years ago from my great aunt, when we were clearing her house after her death.  This drawing had been used as the backing for the oil painting and we had no idea it was there.  The drawing is much better than the oil painting!!

I have googled Emily Lister, just in case she was famous - but not been able to find out anything.

Another thing I can't do. When I was about 16 I was  off school for some weeks through a gastric illness. I filled in my time trying to draw. I had a 'thing' about David McCallum at the time, and copied a picture that I had on my wall ( what a thing to admit to!!). It took me hours, and if I say it myself it was rather good. It has of course gone into the great world of childhood belongings and is no more
