The story, below, caught my attention as it has been the most popular "shared" story on the BBC News website. It makes me smile every time I read it...

Drunk Swedish elk found in apple tree near Gothenburg

Drunken elk stuck in tree, Saro, Sweden, 6 September 2011 The elk was apparently searching for fermenting apples when she got stuck

A homeowner in southern Sweden got a shock when he found a drunken elk stuck in his neighbour's apple tree.

The animal was apparently on the hunt for fermenting apples when she lost her balance and became trapped in the tree.

Per Johansson, from Saro near Gothenburg, found the elk making a roaring noise in the garden next door.

He called the emergency services, who helped him free the boozed-up beast by sawing off branches. She spent the night recovering in the garden.

The next day she took herself off into the woods with her hangover.

It is not unusual to see elk, or moose as they are known in North America, drunk in Sweden during autumn, when there are plenty of apples about.

Other residents of Saro had seen the elk on the loose in the preceding days.

Mr Johansson said the elk appeared to be sick, drunk, or "half-stupid", the Associated Press reported.

While playing in Port Isaac today I met a lovely couple called Pamela and Ian Andrews . They live in Brierfield .....Pamela works at the Barrowford Heritage Centre and Ian knows some of my childhood friends from Nelson to Blacko...........
They are in this area for a week and we've arranged to make contact again before they go home.....Just Magic!
Colin , do you know Pamela ?

...she also mentioned a "John" (local historian) in connection with this site (although they are not members themselves ) Would that be "Barrowford John"  I wonder ?.......
Anybody want me to send you a stick of rock ?.....Ha!

Take care with sticks of rock. I've got some from my grandchildren, and after reading the label saw   "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children, and may contain colours E  102,122,124,129,132,104,150153,155.  I seem to have survived the experience.  Sounds a bit 'last decade'  to me - not a word about allergies, or dairy intolerance.

Kev, I've seen pigs get drunk on widfall apples. A very funny sight, the Elk would be even funnier!

Brad, almost certainly John Clayton. Turn them on to the site!

David, takes all the fun out of it doesn't it. I wonder how many people have died from eating rock?

It struck me yesterday that for a bloke reckoning to be taking it easy after a hard day on Saturday I was doing a lot of sweating as I hand-filed cast iron steam chests for me engines in the shed......

SmileNolic, I owe you an apology. I must learn to realise that I can no longer rely on my once excellent memory.

Porto Venere is up North in Liguria, a long way from Salerno. Porto San Venere near Pizzo Calabro on 08/09/43 figures.

The dates you give are in fact correct.

03/09/43 Badoglio signs armistice in secret.

03/09/43 Montgomery crosses Straits of Messina

08/09/43 Badoglio announces on public radio that Italy has surrendered to the Allies, and become a 'co-bellligerent'

09/09/43 Allied troops begin landings in Salerno.

All checked in my history books :-)

cheers,

Bradders, re rock, many years i used to drink with an amateur con man, Frank, in the post war years one of is earlier scams in Blackpool while sweet rationing still existed, he would stand at the enterance of the coach park selling drunken returning passengers sticks of rock, these were wrapped up in white wax paper and looked the real thing, it was only next day that the poor little child/ren dicovered that the rock was acually sawn of brush stales painted white with pink ends, just one of Franks many scams, if times were good it was brandy & cigars, if things were bad it was a fag and half a bitter

SmileMy attention was caught today by an article in the online version of the Organ of Truth claiming that 67000 job seekers need to take English lessons. From what I see on UK TV surely those are very low figures. More like 670000. Saw a reality show the other day (yes, I do watch the odd one - help me get to sleep) where a 'trainee teacher' had never heard of Lichtenstein!!

Poor kids that she will end up teaching.

cheers,

Brilliant! Of course it was the right place. Apart from the fact that it reminded you of someone I think there is a lot of truth in it. Everyone has different talents and if they are encouraged they will develop. And yes, I took the alarm clock to bits, my problem was that when I put it back together it wouldn't work! There must be a gene somewhere that encourages logical thinking and problem solving. If so, I think I might have it.

What grabbed me yesterday was the fact that I made 4 steam chest lids out of scrap lumps of cast iron that I picked up years ago. Recycling at its best, something useful made out of rubbish. So satisfying!
