Anyhow as promised here are the answers:

1. How many revolutions must the large cog make to return all the cogs to their starting positions if - Cog 1 has 17 teeth, Cog 2 has 12 teeth, Cog 3 has 5 teeth and Cog 4 has 4 teeth?

Ans: 60 revolutions - find the lowest common denominator of number of teeth on each cog then disregard double ups fom other cogs (show in brackets) - e.g

17 = 1 x 17

12 = 2 x 2 x 3

5 = (1) x 5

4 = (2 x2)

Leaving 1 x 17 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 5  = 1020 (the lowest number in to which 17, 12, 5 & 4 can be divided)

Then 1020 / 17 = 60

3. Two rockets are orbiting around different suns. Unfortunately, there is one point where the there obits co-incide and therefore the rockets could crash if they hit at the same time. Rocket A takes 4 years to orbit its sun and Rocket B takes 8 years. How long before they crash?

Ans:  Never - Rocket  A passes the collission point in years 3,7,11,15, 19 ..............etc

Rocket B in years 5, 13, 21, 29, 37 ........................etc 

Therefore the as the first & second series of years are never the same the rockets will never crash!

In math terms it is '4x + 3' never equals '8y + 5'  for any x or y

Sent the mensa test in, went to Manchester, did the formal tests, got results, got paperwork to say I AM A GENIUS, paid my membership.
