New Year, new topic. If you want to see the old one do a forum search for same title but 2008.

Just a technical note which came to mind when I was listening to the sensible suggestions being made by Corus to keep their staff and retrain them in the recession. One of the problems with steelmaking is that if a plant has to be shut down, even temporarily, things like furnaces destroy themselves as they cool down and need to be relined before they can come back into production. Other plant suffers through disuse. This applies to many continuous processes, particularly those using high temperatures. The point being that what looks like a temporary shut-down can be a lot more serious and expensive than it sounds.

Obama giving his first interview on Arabian TV and the gathering momentum of opposition to the NHS national database. I think the prnny is beginning to drop. I heard a bloke off the accounts scrutiny committee say that the initiative was approved during a half hour cabinet meeting and the contracts were signed before the NHS had worked out what it wanted so the contractors didn't know either. Sounds like s recipe for a cock-up to me.  Estimated £3billion spent so far and probably another £10billion needed. The MP also said that nobody knew what the admin inside government had cost but he reckoned it was substantial. Sooner they ditch the national database and let the trusts introduce their own local syatems the better.

I worry too about big financial over-runs with the Severn Barrage if they go for the Government's favourite option of a continuous barrage from Cardiff to Weston. I doubt whether the engineering consultants have a full grasp of the magnitude of the difficulties posed by the silt in the Severn estuary. Enormous amounts of silt go up and down the estuary twice a day with the tides. There may well be no other place on earth with the same level of this problem. Locals whose families have always worked in and around the estuary can't believe that anyone would risk even partially blocking this movement of silt. I suspect the engineers would go ahead and then say Oh Dear, we've struck a problem and it's going to cost £[think of a number] more than the original budget. Some artists' pictures of the barrages are shown here.

To return to the Heinz soup saga/scandal. I must be getting naive in my old age. The 85p cost was just a ploy for a few days. They are now 4 for £2.00,  which is much more reasonable. I bought four, which is probably a year's supply.  There are occasional moments when nothing else will do.

Good ling Tiz. I'm not qualified to judge on which would be best. My first thought as with all these proposals is that I still believe that in fifty years we shall be in a position to use fusion. The technology is there now and the investment to make it a practical reality will come when the energy crisis really hits us. We are still staggering on with old technology. Funnily enough, the big boost could now come from America, Obama is serious about energy security, he knows that they have to move away from oil and the other world centre of research into fusion is UCAL at Berkely in California.

When my mate Robert bought Masson Mill he reinstated the large water tubines and started to make his own electricity and pump surplus back into the grid. Apart fom the occasional downtime they work 24 hours a day. There are plenty of water power resources that are unused and we would do well to stop worrying about unit cost and do what they are doing up at Settle on the Ribble, get useful power out of water sources at no damage to the environment. Absolutely carbon free once the work has been done to make thim useful again.

Before we can get far ahead with nuclear fusion we need to convert the European public to supporting and trusting science & technology. They don't like fission, never mind fusion. Take GM crops for instance - most of the rest of the world has been using them for about 12 years or more with no safety problems. We used to celebrate science & technology - and the Americans still do. But we have allowed consumer pressure groups to take over in Europe. This government preferred a white-hot financial revolution to a white-hot technological revolution!

Tiz, I have an idea that will change, that's why I said 'when the energy crisis really hits us'. The objectors will be dragged kicking and screaming to reality. I've always said I have little respect for people who campaign against nuclear power and then go home and take advantages of the benefits of the investment forty years ago. We need base load generation to put the floor under renewables. We either do it with fossil fuel or nuclear. Simple as that. The only base load renewable technology I know of is hydro-electric and we havent enough river sites to make it significant.

Base Load now that's a terminology to conjuror with.

Base Load needs to be carried by the most efficient plants, So Nuclear needs to carry the base load. Hot stand by looks like Dinorwig or Dinorwig  equivalent  Plants. I bet we go for Spinning Reserve which can be carried by Thermal Coal Fired Plants.
I agree we need to carry the tree huggers  along with us, a good way to do this would be to switch off the UK from the grid for 24 hours. Now that would be interesting, I was once brow beaten by an RSPB guy about North Sea Oil production. I asked excuse me how did you arrive here today ??? the answer was by car !!!  What did he think it ran on  ???

Would be a good excersize for National Grid to do a "black start" as well, would be an interesting thing to see.......
