I have a CD by Bix Beiderbecke, or as I used to call him Bicks Spiderbeck. There's some good stuff on it - 20 great tracks including Singin' the Blues, Clarinet Marmalade,  Riverboat Shuffle, Clementine and Royal Garden Blues among others. Great.

I am in the process of transfering a lot of prewar trad stuff from Cassette to CD. Most of it started out on 78s. The nice thing is that with modern filtering, during the rerecording and manipulation, it sounds even better that ever.

Now the official wedding invitaton is out  (I'm so excited....) I notice that although all the souvenirs have been done with the initials W & K to avoid the unfortunate combination of WC, the invitation says Catherine.

The Wedding. Sorry, but who cares?

Tiz. Good one, listen to Feed Back on R4 and see whether you've had an impact. There is a good book that should be required reading. 'The Modern Researcher' by Barzun and Graff. 3rd edition 1977. Still a classic.

I think we have been very lucky with the new neighbours. They are a nice couple and  and can stand having their leg pulled. Just think what it could have been like, a house full of loud music!

Stanley I guess there is no place for Royalty in a socialist state. "Who cares?"  Once again we all have a choice, but for or against Royalty let's consider the boost for the economy that "the wedding" will bring, not to mention that it might help to preserve some of that "British" tradition that seems to be under attack.  It might also help to cheer up the country during hard times. The "FIRM" generates income for the UK on an annual basis through the huge number of tourists that flock to London for a "bit of history and a fix of tradition".

Herb, we don't have a choice....we're stuck with them, actually !

What part of "British Tradition" do you percieve to be under attack ?

(..added later as an edit.....Sorry if that sounds "wrong"....I have been very involved in tradition , particularly Morris and Folk music , word of mouth and ancient monuments etc....I'm interested to know what you think is not being "looked after")

and as for "unearned privilege" (Frank) , the definition is precise in those two words.

I would prefer to see our "Royal Family" operate using their own money (they have vast amounts , you know) rather than being funded by our (not Her Majesty's) Government.

We hear the arguement about how much income they "generate" through attracting tourists , but are not well informed about the cost of them attracting terrorists .....I know I'm playing with words , but I believe there are Huge hidden costs to the public and private purse when it comes to the "Preparations " for a Royal Visit , and they happen nearly every bloomin' day.....(and that's the tip of the iceberg)

So on balance (and putting it mildly) , I'm not too sure THEY are such a good thing !

He lived in a two up two down,  as opposed to they lived in a semi detached which bit is the unearned ??
By the way Your in danger of becoming a Ventriloquist Dummy !!! That's someone who dosen't have any original thoughts.

Frank ....My thoughts on the Royal Family are indeed  my own....and not shared/agreed with by some , I expect .....I'm happy to argue my corner in this respect .

I'm sorry that I don't understand your oblique reference to housing , perhaps you'd like to explain. Who were you refering to?

(..".ventriloquist".... should have had an apostrophe "s" , by the way )

PS Just in case  a moderator is thinking of deleting the previous writers comment  on grounds of "getting a bit personal"....I'd rather you didn't . It demonstrates the block that can be put on reasonable discussion by someone who seems determined to start a dispute ......(on almost any subject)

Bradders no need to argue "your corner", I don't give a ----if you agree or disagree with me or Frank or anyone else, you have your corner, I have mine, I understand mine and am quite happy with it.  Some of the simple traditions that come to mind quickly...singing of national anthem at all public gatherings (when sung should be as an anthem and not a pop song), xmas trees in public places, greetings like "merry Christmas" and not happy holidays.  Do we really need to correct grammar, we are not writing essays for publication, many of us are elderly with less than perfect vision, if you can read it leave it alone, don't scare people away by being petty,  There are many studies on the economic benefit of the monarchy, one only has to travel around the UK to see and understand the value of history, tradition and Royalty to the economy.  Personally I don't like the Canadian Senate (similar to the UK House of Lords)a great starting place to slash costs without hurting the lower income earners.

Thankyou  for a rational and polite reply Herb...I don't have too many problems with the sentiment in what you're saying.

I remember standing up at the end of films at the cinema for the National Anthem..Nobody would dare move to leave ,

But then one has to ask , "What were we doing ?"......and I'm pretty sure that most of us  (baby-boomers) had no idea...It was just what everybody did !....

I love REAL  tradition , but  cannot abide artifice......

And , if someone wants to insult me , it's only polite to use proper grammar ......

It shows class !

I was taught the national anthem at school and stopped joining in as soon as I was old enough to think for myself and understand the words.

Herb, I was at an international gathering once and some bright spark decided it would be a good thing if the small delegations each sang the first verse of their country's national anthem. The French were very impressed when I joined in with them, the three delegates from Canada were mortified when they realised that none of them knew the words. I bought them a drink immediately afterwards and commiserated with them.

"Unearned Privilege" is privilege that has not been earned.

Brad , confound their knavish tricks!
