Would some technical expert give me some advice re the above ?, my current CD drive refuses to open every time, i have to push the "open" button several time before it opens,, I have several older CD drives that ive accumalted from previous computers, and they function ok, my question is , the drive that is giving me trouble has RW on the front, and i am assuming that this is what enables me to re write / write on discs ?, i did'nt have this facility on my older computers, so can the older CD drives write / re write etc, or do i need to replace with a new drive that as this facility built in ?.

No, not all CD drives are capable of R/W operation. If the drive is a CD R/W, I'd get a DVD R/W drive to replace it. Little difference in price unless you want Blu Ray.
Be careful about drive interfaces, new fangled ones are likely to be SATA, wheras your old one is likely PATA.

Bodger, when I built those two PCs and described the process on OGFB earlier this year I put a DVD/RW drive in each. I bought them from Dabs and they are now only about £14 each. But they are for PCs with SATA (serial ATA cables, the SATA power cables are narrower than the old ribbon cables). Also I don't know if Dabs deliver to Ireland! If you need SATA here it is:

As Pluggy said, if your PC is older you might need one suitable for PATA instead. Dabs doesn't seem to list them now. There are ones you can connect via USB although they cost more.
