Many of you have pets, and it is possibly fairly well known that over the past thirteen years my Wife and I have rescued a number of animals. Two were posted on this site as Cats in need of a new home. These two were taken in by "Steamtractor", another member. We took two Kittens from my late Stepdaughter Christine just over twelve years ago "Jethro and Ellie" Then came "Elmo" snatched from a life of misery in Padiham, the owners of this Kitten were told. "you must have your cat neutered, or She will keep on having Kittens which you are not prepared to give the attention they require" That Cat was taken by car to the North Yorks Moors, put out and abandoned, Later to be bragged about in a local club. Elmo's twin Brother had already been taken in by Christines Mother in Law. This cat is called "Frankie" as in Sinatra, because of his blue eyes, when his owner was dying of cancer, we took him in, that now makes four. Two more came soon after,"Evie" and "Lucy" Kittens, both rescued in Barlick on Christmas Eve ten years ago. During all of this we gave succour to visitng cats at our home and one very old Black and White "Sylvester" had is home outside in a purpose built shelter. Whatever scraps and unwanted food were always put outside for the Hedgehogs at night and one evening after dinner, my wife took some bits of steak out for Sylvester whom we thought was sat under the front of my van, but it was not he, and we never saw him again. This little chap was "Bobbie" almost identical, but much younger. He eventually moved in, a right little character. One summer night when we had got fed up with the crackheads who used to frequent Fernbank Mill carpark at night, my Wife who had tired of the abuse, fired up and went off to "Have a go" Bobbie was right there with her, it worked out at ten of them and two of us and a small cat, the enemy fled. About this time a dark shadow would appear at night looking for food, a beautiful little round Tabby whom we now call "Molly" here beside me right now. This now makes eight, finally to be joined by "Katie" the Mother of our two original cats. Katie died two years ago, just coughed quietly and went to sleep. The strange thing about this is that all of these cats apart from Elmo had been neutered, someone had cared enough to do that. So why not look after them. The sadness is that "Bobby" had to be put to sleep this afternoon after developing a masive tumour in his stomach. Of all the cats that I have known, he was the tops, a good pal. The frightening part of all this is knowing that this will happen again and again and my only wish is to be here when it does. Many older people have pets, they are always there, warm friendly and reliable. Vets fees are very high, unless you are on benefits. and I feel true sympathy for those who have a beloved pet but are afraid of the cost. Bobby is at peace now, no more pain, for my pain I have Rum. To all of you who have pets, look after them, keep them safe, and do not let them wander. Good night little Bobby.

My daughter has today lost one of her two cats ...... Drowned in the backyard above-ground pool ...... Apparently it had this thing about climbing the steps and drinking the pool water ...... Must have over balanced and fallen in ...... No matter how many times anyone tried to stop the habit, the cat just kept going back ...... Unfortunately it's impossible to keep an eye on pets 24/7, and this was just one of those moments.

I have no idea what happened to Gloria's last imput, but I am truly grateful to those of you who have responded to this topic. Bobby is now in his favourite place, the garden, but we miss him. On Saturdays the cats all get fish for tea appart from Evie who is a vegitarian, and last night when I dished up I called him, it brought a tear or two, but now Iam thankful for the fact that whilst he was with us, he was happy, it is also clear that the other cats miss him as well. We will never know what goes on in animals minds, it is probably just as well, for I also believe that they are smarter than us. Thank you once again, all of you. Thomo.

It was with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to another of our Cat Family yesterday. Jethro the gentle ginger giant has now joined Bobby in our garden, organ failure, less than a week from start to finish. Jethro was thirteen in May and we have had him and his Sister from the ages of six months. He was the head of the clan and was probably the nicest Cat I have ever known, gentle, affectionate and extemely well behaved. He will be greatly missed by us all. That cats can communicate on a different level to us mere mortals stands out right now as the behaviour of the others and his Sister Ellie in particular is much as you would see with us humans, Farewell old friend.

Thomo,

I don't know how I missed the news about loosing your first cat.  To loose another so soon after must be quite devastating and I am so sorry for your loss.

It is indeed a lovely photograph - one to be treasured along with all the memories.

Sad news Thomo, and though as a cat lover it brings tears to my eyes, I'm sure you will soon be thinking of the next wonderful feline who might fill that empty space......

Thank you all, we still have Jethro's Sister Ellie, she is the last of our original Cats, and we have Elmo and Frankie, twin brothers rescued from Burnley, Evie and Lucy, both rescued in Barlick on Christmas Eve 1999 and last but not least Molly who came to us eight years ago, fed up with being kicked out when the holidays came around.

That is so sad, we too have a number of feline friends in the garden, all carefully marked by something that helps us to remeber them  eg sweet williams where little Billy lies

It is just over a year since I put this on here and today another sad trip to the vets. Elmo had been losing weight for a couple of weeks even though he was eating heartily and he was doing just that this morning when he collapsed. So now he will join Bobby and Jethro in the garden. I will dig out a photo of him and add it later.
