From articles I have read, some people are saying that the mining companies have a lot to answer for re the floods. I can't say cause I don't follow it all on those levels, but if the floods turn out to be not totally weather related, I'm sure that when the victims finally get back to normal, they will have a lot to say.

My worry a few days ago was that with so much rubbish going into our east coast oceans "What will happen to our world famous and protected Great Barrier Reef?" It's extremely fragile already, I could weep.

Cathy, people always tend to lash out when there is a natural disaster, they need someone to blame. Cause of the floods is too much rain. I heard a discussion on World Service and they commented that it happens about once every 100 years and the reason it didn't affect the Aborigines was that they made sure they weren't on the flood plains when it happened. HModern Man builds in inappropriate places and has to put up with the consequences. Many cities have developed in the same way, London is another, and one day they will pay for it.
NOT RAINING IN BARLICK! Lovely change, Glass rising (29.25") and it will get colder.

Can't agree more Stanley, San Francisco is a prime example. Built back more or less on the same footprint as was devastated in the 1906 earthquake. Another massive disaster waiting to happen, the San Andreas fault is one of the most active on the planet. No amount of monitoring will give sufficient warning for a complete evac when it happens again.
Yes, a nice day in Barlick today, due to get colder but dry with it. Will be good for walking. Going to pick a day this week and get out onto the fells.

Before he built in inappropriate places, Modern Man farmed in inappropriate places. If you take the popular (but slightly dangerous*) coach trip from Catania up the hairpin bends onto the volcano Mount Etna in Sicily you'll find small farms extending as far up the volcano's sides as the soil will allow. The agriculture changes with altitude (as temperature drops) and you pass through bands of crops such as olives, grapes, walnuts. Every now and then the farms and houses get burnt out by lava - and sometimes the people die. But the survivors always come back and start again because the soil is so good with its mineral content that they can make more money per hectare than anywhere else. Volcanic areas are often great for agriculture, but so are floodplains and deltas!
*Slightly dangerous...nothing to do with the volcano but due to the Italian drivers who take the hairpin bends on the wrong side of the road. Also some of the hairpin bends have a short cut across them so you can bypass the full length and take the quick route down - very exciting!

Glass has risen to almost 29.5. Dry. Isn't it strange that many weather changes coincide with the full moon.

Ours has reached 30. A lovely day but black clouds round the edges. Just been shopping to The Rock in Bury, what a nice place, walking to the shops with no traffic and plenty of room in the car park. Why can't Burnley do something like that instead of attracting the cheap shops.

Same here Moh this morning, almost 30". Clear sky, sharp frost and a full moon. Most encouraging thing is that the days are lengthening quite noticeably. I was out with Jack in good daylight at 08:15 yesterday. The earliest this year. This morning could be earlier because the sky is so clear. Very encouraging, the year has turned and we can look forward to a gradual retreat from winter. Still plenty of bad weather to come. 1947 didn't hit till February but we can start to be optimistic!

Strange day here - the sun is trying to get out but keeps getting covered with clouds like fog. Looks quite Springlike looking through the window. The glass is up to 32 now.

No opinion Cathy because I don't like them but not in a Hole like New Orleans!
Sharp dry frost, glass steady on 30". Settled weather for a few days I think.
