I've had no need for the Twitter web service until now and have therefore not learnt how to use it. But now I do want to use it and will soon set up an account. Before I do this, have any of you got advice on how to proceed? It's probably easy but there might be things I would wish I had known in advance (there usually are!).

Now, why do I want to have a Twitter account all of a sudden? The reason is that it has become a very good way to complain about services and products and to get companies to pay attention and rectify problems - in fact much better than the usual routes. Some companies, particularly big ones such as BT and the main ISPs are now monitoring Twitter all the time by searching it for their company and brand names. They seem to be ultrasensitive about comments on Twitter (probably because they believe the Twittering classes are younger, have more influence and are more `up-market') and are falling over backwards to placate people with complaints. Not only are they dealing with problems quickly but they often give gifts or money in compensation without even being asked for them. Customers pursuing their complaints through the usual channels (contacting customer service and waiting hours on the phone or never getting email responses) can drop off a cliff as far as the companies are concerned now. They've discovered Twitter and nothing else matters. This is the way to go now, get yourself a Twitter account and broadcast your complaint to the world then make a cup of tea and wait for the response. (A word of warning. Don't make the mistake of giving out personal data unless you are sure you are dealing direct with the company.)

Good luck with that Tizer, I have had one for a while but don't use it much, not very straightforward in my opinion, I shall be interested to see how you go on with it.

Good luck Tizer.

Do keep away from Stephen Fry, I believe its catching and is a communicable disease.

Oh I remember the public information films warning about it, there was a bare midriff woman who had to hide behind a veil, and someone was singing Fry's lurgies a fright!

Don't worry, I'll be avoiding the Glitterati! (They wouldn't want me anyway, sitting here in my jeans, woolly jumper and fleece jacket and being a scientist and collector of stamps, postcards etc.)

Twitter or Twaddle...

As I mentioned above, I've found out (via  a big article in The Times newspaper) that Twitter has a specific use for getting complaints about services and products dealt with by companies; also for finding out other people's experiences and opinions of such services and products. This sounds helpful and so I would sign up to Twitter for this purpose.

Well, I've read the long Wikipedia page explaining all about Twitter, read the Twitter pages on Privacy and Terms of Use, looked at the SignUp page and done a number of Twitter searches on topics that interest me. Conclusions? Forget it! Twitter is drivel, unbelievable rubbish, it should be called Twaddle not Twitter. Searches for my keywords yielded very little, if anything, that was of use to me. I'll wait until I need to complain to a company and if they don't respond satisfactorily then I might get a Twitter account solely to give them a public kick up the ass. But for now...why should I waste time looking at Twaddle when OGFB has more than I can keep up with!

Nicely put Tizer. My first thought on reading your hope that a company would see your complaint, via twitter,  and act upon it , was that you might as well put a message in a bottle and throw it into the sea!
I have recently joined Facebook - thinking that  I was missing something.  I certainly am missing something - the whole point of the thing.  Since the rest of the world seems to have joined though, and be happy with it, it's probably me (again)

Facebook and Twitter leave me cold.

They are odious (in my ever so humble opinion).

I do have a Facebook account which has nothing other than my name on it - at one time it was the only way I could get my god daughter in Oz to communicate with me!

I have my privacy settings as high as they will go, but even still you have to be careful because if someone you are friends with has low privacy settings, it is still possible to read your account on Facebook.

Creepy.

I'm on Facebook too. I keep getting friends I don't know - they are usually friends of a friend or a friend of a relative. You can get lady friends on there !

You can choose who you accept as a friend can't you? You can also block "friends" as well. Depends how you choose to be treated. Have a look at your privacy settings and configure accordingly.

I think I must agree with Anni here. Whilst these sites can be entertaining for many they also can be extremely dangerous, I know of people not far from here who were good friends, that is until a woman went on facebook and digitally attacked a mans wife, not intended for the wifes eyes, rather the mans, however it was first read by the wife. The woman who sent this was an emloyee of the man, but not any more and the friendship is well and truly extinct.

I really had a chuckle over this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12393893

A Department of Transport Official made a complaint to the PCC because a newspaper printed her Twitter that she was hungover at work.

Her complaint was that it was a private comment and only meant to be seen by her 700 hundred (yes - seven hundred ) followers and by publishing the Tweet, the paper had breached her privacy.

Actually, I am wondering whether I should be crying and not laughing.
