Over the years I've not done so bad when it comes to working with computers, and most times I can eventually fix things up when it all goes pear-shaped.
Yesterday my Mac went not just pear-shaped but a complete fruit pudding with meringue and custard. Over the past few weeks it had been getting slower and slower until it said: "You know what? I can't be bothered anymore. I quit." And it did.
Fortunately there's a thing called Time Machine which regularly backs up the OS and all files to an external drive, so I wasn't too nonplussed.
Unfortunately my Mac refused even to start up. Missing its core thingies or something.
No probs - just re-install the OS from the original discs. Almost there - the discs were a bit out of date but I could easily update the version from the internet.
Went to restore all my settings, files, programmes, etc from Time Machine. Unfortunately my finely tuned and slimmed down original system had bloated by about 20GB when reinstalled - and my drive didn't have enough space on it to complete the job.
Grrr.
My backup drive (1TB capacity) is also getting full so it looks like I'm going to have to buy another to dump my data into, then give it all a good clean out.
On top of that, once you start messing with reinstallations, I find much of my work software needs reactivating from the software companies - it's going to take me absolutely ages to get back to where I was a few, happy and organised days ago.
I hate computers.

Glad it all worked out for you, haven't been to bed yet, been up all night trying to repair the drive first,
And making sure all backup files are up to date, i should be able to start putting in the new drive with in the next 2 hrs.
This does mean that all my sites will be down a couple of hrs but i hope all goes well.

I begin to realise how lucky I am that my work is almost all text and simple image based and the system I am using seems to be stable and on top of its job. This is not an attack on any other system, just a simple statement of fact. I am lucky not smug. I've reloaded my OS too often in the old days and yes, I remember all the frustration and time-wasting. Come to think, Windows98 was probably a very good training ground!

You might be able hack Linux onto a Windows CE computer, it would be an order of magnitude more useful. Its definitely doorstop territory with CE.
Linux will run on all sorts of stuff, much of which most people wouldn't classify as computers.

Might be easier than trying to get it onto the machine...

Aren't pendrives useful! Pluggy introduced me to them and my 8gb drive is so useful when I have to scan something on the old IBM or use one of the programmes that don't easily translate to Linux.

Does anyone know how to change a password on Yahoo email??
I have a virus (?) attached to mine and it sends my contacts msg's about viagra. I have norton but people tell me if I change my password it will stop. I can't find a way into Yahoo to change my password  Help

Go to http://home.bt.yahoo.com/
Click on "My Account" on the top right hand side of the screen.
Click on Change My Password under the Quick Links
It might even work by just clicking the Change My Password link, above.

I have also heard of this happening with Gmail, so this is why i am glad i use my own servers,
and they are all in house so to speak, and i offer an email account to all my site members if they want one,
i also have 19 servers in all, it does take alot of my time keeping then up to date and protected but its fun to me to be able to Host sites, host an email server , chat, jabber,shoutcast irc with irc services and many more, it can be a big headache as some of you here may know,

Seriously, it's an AllFine. But it isn't ... fine, that is.
So can anyone recommend a reasonably priced laptop - doesn't need to be all-singing, all-dancing. Needs to be wi-fi enabled, though.
