As there seems to be quite a bit of artistic talent around here, I thought I would start a pencil sketch section .....

I heard on the radio that there is an exhibition of pictures and they are all simply black rectangles. The chap in charge told the BBC lady that they were all "different blacks". As a non-artist I was a bit troubled by this, then I realised that if I were asked to put on an exhibition of black pictures I could do a much more interesting one.

I would have pictures of the inside of a chimney, Pendle by night, a pint of Guinness, a tin of treacle, a Golf GTi, a Norton Dominator motor bike, a switched off computer screen, coal....there's lots of scope. That artist must have been very short on creativity!

Tize, I agree with you about the art bit but there are a number of differing blacks that exist. Black and white are in fact the two most dificult colours to obtain true and accurate values on.
I remember years ago when I worked at Armoride  the diificulties there were in producing a consitent white compound to get white plastic.
I'm sure the clever lads have sorted this problem out but it was a real issue in the early 70's. Nolic

This is hard work for me as an ex-scientist. In science, black and white are not colours and are absolute - therefore there cannot be two different blacks. A black object absorbs all the light falling on it and a white object reflects all the light. Coloured objects are coloured because they reflect varying proportions of varying wavelengths of light. So artists have all the fun and scientists have a boring life!

Yup, that about sums it up Tize. That is the problem with looking for definates as opposed to impressions of things.

He certainly has skill. Good depth of shadow there. Always found that difficult myself..
